“Look for the true people like Nick did with Harriet.” Liam Woodrum on what he hopes audiences take away from Geek Girl

In the Netflix series Geek Girl, Harriet Manners struggles with school bullies and fitting in amidst rising stardom in the fashion world. For Liam Woodrum’s character, fellow model Nick Park, Harriet is a breath of fresh air in that world. We got to chat with Liam before the series premiered to learn more about his character, his firsts while on set, and fun behind the scenes moments.

Geek Girl follows Harriet Manners who has spent her whole life trying to fit in. But during a school trip to London Fashion Week, her world takes an unexpected turn when a modeling agency notices her. Harriet must navigate school and fashion as she undergoes big changes in her life. Emily Carey, known for her role in House of the Dragon, plays Harriet, and in addition to Liam, the cast also includes Sarah Parish, Jemima Rooper, Zac Looker, Tim Downie, Rochelle Harrington, and more.

In addition to Geek Girl, Liam got his start in the Hallmark movie Love in Zion National: A National Park Romance. He is also set to star in the upcoming film 213 Bones

“I wear a robe in the show that says Nick on the back so I got to keep that which is pretty cool.”

We asked Liam what his favorite thing about Nick is, and he said he likes how Nick loves Harriet for who she is in the series, which makes the fashion world much more enjoyable and interesting for Nick.

“My favorite thing about Nick is probably the way he treats Harriet. I think he just accepts her for the way she is.”

Liam said one of his firsts on set, and also one of the most challenging things, was learning how to catwalk for a scene. He said he watched a lot of videos about how to walk a runway, but also revealed that Stacy McKenzie, a model who was also a judge on America’s Next Top Model, made a cameo in the show and showed many of the actors how to catwalk.

“Just getting over my own fear of doing the [catwalk] was pretty scary.”

Geek Girl was filmed in London, and Liam said it was cool getting to live in another country for a few months, and he and the cast hung out a lot off set.

“Getting the opportunity to live in a different country for an extensive amount of time is so much fun.”

While Liam said his first day on set was nerve wracking, his co-star Emmanuel Imani, who plays Wilbur Evans, told him to just have fun, which made him relax and gave him confidence in his role.

“[Emmanuel] saying just have fun, everything kind of just came back together.”

Consider This:

  • Being on a set can be scary, especially if it is your first time. Don’t forget to have fun and be yourself. Take some time to relax and ground yourself.
  • Dailies are the unedited footage of a film or television series. Watching film dailies helps the creative team assess the shoot’s progress and adjust as needed.
  • Don’t force crying on cue. Let it come naturally.
