Michael Weaver and Selenis Leyva talk about Diary of a Future President season 2

YEM sat down to interview Diary of a Future President stars Michael Weaver (who plays Sam Faber) and Selenis Leyva (who plays Gabi Caño-Reed).

Diary of a Future President season 2 brought about many changes to the show itself. Michael Weaving said that the show’s focus transitioned from a middle school girl to more of a family show. Even though Michael said that the transition from season one to two was natural, at times, it also posed as a challenge.

“We [the characters] are closer in this season, so I think the thing that changed for me from one to two was a living arrangement and some challenges that went with that,” Michael said. “But we kind of tackled those in a comedic way. I think the show did a good job of showing people with the growing pains of moving in together.”

“We’ve embraced the family unit a lot more than we did in season one, and that’s exciting,” Selenis said. “Having the character Sam move in with the family also heightens everything. It gives us a lot more story lines and just a situation. I fully enjoyed season two so so so much.”

Along with the major transitions that occurred in season 2, both Michael and Selenis also talked about having the opportunity to learn from fellow castmates, specifically Tess Romero (who plays Elena Cañero Reed) and Charlie Bushnell (who plays Bobby Cañero Reed).

“Tess and Charlie have evolved so much in the last year individually as actors themselves and as young people. It’s exciting for me to watch just get better and better,” Selenis said.

Michael said that being onset with the younger castmates reminded him of what it was like to be a teenager. “But I can’t relate to some things like TikTok. That stuff just goes right over my head,” Michael said.

“I’ve learned from Tess and Charlie how to balance life, and how to have more fun,” Selenis said. “Just how to enjoy life a little more, how to laugh a little more.”
