There is something undeniably irresistible about Rainbow Rowell’s writing, even if you don’t immediately start reading her books. Just the titles and blurbs of her work, like Fangirl, have an unmistakable and unique energy, inviting the reader into her spunky, funny and eye-opening world.
Which is why it’s not surprising that one of her most brilliant books, the 80s-era teenage love story Eleanor & Park, is being turned into a film by Dreamworks. We were so excited when we heard, we couldn’t help but share our dream casting fantasy, but since then there’s more to report.
First of all, Rowell is continuing to push that the leads be played by unknowns, in order to make the film more relatable to audiences. “There are not established actors who could play these roles, I don’t think,” Rowell told MTV News. “I don’t think they’re unusual characters in life — I think there are a lot of people like Eleanor and Park — but they are unusual people to be in movies and to star in movies. There’s not a lot of chubby redheads and 16-year-old Korean guys who star in movies.”
Whether or not the studios bend to Rowell’s desire to keep the cast authentic and unknown, she will have some modicum of control, since she will be writing the screenplay herself (a first for her).
Which just leaves the question…who will direct? May we suggest (500) Days of Summer’s Marc Webb, or Fault in Our Stars’ Josh Boone? Rainbow herself begs to differ though, as she has been reported to want a woman to direct. That could work too!
In any case, we must have patience, Rainbow fans. E&P isn’t set to even start filming until 2015.
