Teen Wolf, S03E20 – “Echo House”

Teen Wolf season 3B is darker than ever. “Echo House” revolves around a mental institution. You read that right, in this episode, Stiles checked himself into a mental hospital. That would be intense by itself, but as he’s checking in, another patient commits suicide. Lucky for Stiles, he has a roommate, Oliver, to show him the ropes. While Stiles is adjusting to life on the inside, we see Argent and Deaton in jail (in separate cells) and learn that they were working together. We also find out that the letharia vulpine from last episode only has temporary affects. Deaton keeps talking about a scroll he needs to fully cure Stiles.

Back at the mental hospital, Stiles runs into Malia. She’s not happy about their ill-timed reunion.  As part of his therapy, Stiles is told that he must stay awake if he wants to stop the nogitsune. Stiles comes up with a plan break into the basement and recruits Malia to steal the keys, but their spot is blown up before the plan takes any real shape. Solitary sucks.

Scott and friends come up with a different plan to track down the scroll that involves breaking into an armored vehicle. That would go better if they didn’t come across another werewolf, Kinkade, trying to get the scroll himself. Malia rescues Stiles from solitary confinement and head down to the basement…where things get a little steamy. It’s not surprising but it was a little bit out of place. Ah, can’t fight love.

Malia figures out that the nogitsune is behind a hollow wall, but before she and Stiles can do anything about it, his roommate Oliver waylays them. I mean, it’s not that surprising that his strange roommate in a MENTAL INSTITUTION is a creep, but what can you do? Post-brawl, the nogitsune tells Stiles to let it in or watch Malia die. Considering he still has a soul, he chooses to let it in. Deaton reads the scroll and says that the nogitsune’s host body needs to change its form in order to remove it. Running out of options, the group realizes that means that Stiles has to become a werewolf. Malia leaves the hospital to look for Scott to help. The episode was one of the darkest yet, and it still managed to have funny, light moments. What did you think of “Echo House”?
