HUNGER GAMES – MOCKINGJAY PART 1

Summed up as: After a couple of cheeky faux-official teaser trailers ‘from’ the Capitol, here we have the first full trailer of the third installment in the history-making series.

Saddest thing in the trailer: Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s posthumous turn as Plutarch Heavensbee. We’re still wondering how they’re planning on finishing Mockingjay Part 2…

Weirdest thing in the trailer: How the Capitol’s henchmen in white and black look exactly like Vader’s Storm Troopers in the Star Wars universe. Shameless copy or covert homage?

Hottest thing: Gale’s (Liam Hemsworth’s) closeup. Peeta seems absent here.

Worth seeing opening weekend? What do you think???

THE HOBBIT: The Battle of the Five Armies

Summed up as: Peter Jackson’s second opus of a Tolkien trilogy comes to a long and studied end, with Smaug, Bilbo and company in tow.

Did they show too much? No, and dare we say it looks slightly underwhelming?

We’re wondering: Most of the old standards are here, many of whom have appeared in all six of these movies: Ian McKellan as Gandalf, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, and reigning Best Actress Oscar Winner Cate Blanchett as Galadriel. But will Gollum make another appearance? We all know he’s the best part.

Worth seeing opening weekend? One more time for good luck!

THE MAZE RUNNER

Summed up as: Get out your scorecard for another dystopian YA novel adaptation, this one featuring Dylan O’Brien (yes! Stiles from Teen Wolf!) fighting for survival within a mysterious and deadly labyrinth.

Did they show too much? No, and we want more!

Most beautiful thing in the trailer: The sumptuous Kaya Scodelario (of Clash of the Titans), who serves it up as the only female trapped in the maze with a cabal of boys. She seems to hold her own.

Worth seeing opening weekend? Even if you haven’t read the James Dashner book, this looks pretty downright amazing.

DEAR WHITE PEOPLE

Summed up as:
This is just getting better and better. After a coy teaser, we see just how intelligent this satire of the black-white relationship in this country promises to be.

Coolest thing about the trailer: Just how unafraid the filmmakers are to call ‘em like they see ‘em. There are too many observational gems to list here.

Funniest thing in the trailer: “Weaved? It’s weave. Now. Present tense.”

Worth seeing opening weekend? #totebags

WHIPLASH

Summed up as:
The Sundance Award winner about an up-and-coming drummer (the incredible Miles Teller) and the music coach who almost ruins his life.

Coolest thing in the trailer: For anyone who has ever struggled with creativity or the feeling of not being ‘good enough’ (i.e., all of us), this trailer might give you chills.

Best part: “I think he likes me more now.”

Worth seeing opening weekend? This one was so hard to catch at the festivals, so we will be there!

GAME OF THRONES: NEW CAST

Summed up as:
A roll call of the new additions to the very international cast of Season 5, each presenting whom they’ll be portraying and how they feel about it.

Who are we most excited to see? Definitely Keisha Castle-Hughes, who is all grown up now after her Oscar nominated turn in Whale Rider 12 years ago!

Best part of the trailer: “I am frothing with excitement to be part of this epic, epic series!”

Watch or DVR? For fans of the show: both.

YOUNG ONES

Summed up as:
The exact opposite of Waterworld. And we’re thinking it’ll be way better.

Did they show too much? No. The glimpses of the triumvirate of fabulous YA stars in this—Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult and our fave Kodi Smit-McPhee—leave us wanted way more.

Interesting fact: The writer and director of this film, Jake Paltrow, is Gwyneth’s younger brother.

Worth seeing opening weekend? Yes!

IF I STAY

Summed up as:
Reigning queen of all things YA, Chloe Grace Moretz, is the star of yet another novel adaptation, this time about a girl caught between worlds after falling into a coma brought on by a car accident.

Did they show too much? No, but we’re slightly concerned that this will resemble Ghost or The Lovely Bones just a bit too much.

Best part of the trailer: Chloe’s onscreen chemistry with love interest Jamie Blackley.

Worth seeing opening weekend? For fans of the Gayle Forman novel, or of Moretz, this is a no-brainer.

HOT TUB TIME MACHINE 2 – Red Band Trailer

Summed up as:
The boys are at it again, this time without John Cusack in tow. Oh, and they go to the future instead. How very Back to the Future.

Did they show too much? Yes. The whole movie is basically here. But then, you won’t have to actually go see it!

Funniest thing in the trailer: Definitely Craig Robinson’s cover of the song “Stay”.

Worth seeing opening weekend? Did you like the first one? Or more aptly: Can you stand Rob Corddry for more than 15 minutes?

THE TOY SOLDIERS

Summed up as:
sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, plus the loss innocence in the 1980s.

Coolest thing about the trailer: The cast of largely unknown actors seem very up to the task of recreating the era and serving the drama.

Don’t miss: The epic beats of Daily Bread.

Worth seeing opening weekend? Uh, yes!!!!

THE GIVER

Most exciting thing in the trailer: The leopard, Meryl’s voice and hair, and Alexander Skarsgard!

Weirdest thing:
Jeff Bridges’ speech impediment?

Did they show too much?
No—they finally got this right. After the minor uproar caused by the first version of the trailer, certain elements more faithful to the book have been included (including black and white footage).

Worth seeing it opening weekend?
A cinematic occasion to see Meryl Streep and Katie Holmes in the same film? You betcha!

GODZILLA

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Curiously, not the monster itself. The tsunami is pretty awesome. OK, and that tail shot is amazing too.

Weirdest thing: Bryan Cranston not in the HAZMAT suit, for once.

Did they show too much? Pretty much. If not with this one, then definitely with the final trailer.

Worth seeing it opening weekend? Uh, duh.

PING PONG SUMMER

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Lea Thompson (of Back to the Future) in another 80s movie!

Weirdest thing: Susan Sarandon drinking beer out of a pitcher.

Worth seeing it opening weekend? Yes, for the Wet Hot American Summer set.

All Cheerleaders Die

Most exciting thing in the trailer: The stunts. Definitely not the zombies, since these undead girls have clearly had a makeover.

Weirdest thing: The genre. Is this a zombie film? Wildly unclear.

Did they show too much? Since it isn’t clear what kind of film this really is, the answer is no.

Worth seeing it opening weekend? If you’re a fan of anything from Heathers to Jennifer’s Body, then go for it.

Trust Me

Most exciting thing in the trailer: The incredible cast, including Molly Shannon, Felicity Huffman, Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney.

Weirdest thing: When the big shot Hollywood agent says, “I’m just asking for a chance.”

Did they show too much? No, and the storyline features intriguing young actress Saxon Sharbino playing…an intriguing young actress, looking for an agent. Let’s see if this as good as Jerry Maguire.

Worth seeing it opening weekend? Wait for Rotten Tomatoes to decide.

Monkey King Reloaded

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Not a whole lot – this looks like a shameless rip-off of Kung Fu Panda.

Weirdest thing: Reloaded? There was a first film?

Did they show too much? Yes?

Worth seeing it opening weekend? For animation to be truly an ‘event’, it needs to at the very least be original. This is not that.

WISH I WAS HERE

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Definitely the weird video game part with the cute little floating space robot.
Weirdest thing: Definitely the weird video game part with the cute little floating space robot!
Did they show too much? For once, they didn’t show nearly enough; after watching this you still might not know what the film is about. But that’s not a bad thing in this case at all.
Worth seeing it opening weekend? After Braff made major headlines with his move to fund this movie on Kickstarter, he set a precedent that has allowed other films—like the Veronica Mars movie—to get made as well. So this one is worth the watch!
Special Mention: True to form, director and star (and co-writer) Braff used music by his favorite band, The Shins, in the trailer. We are fans.

22 Jump Street

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Explosions and college parties.
Weirdest thing: Jonah Hill in Cure-style drag. Even one second is enough.
Did they show too much? Yes, but they probably needed to in order to put together a decent trailer.
Worth seeing it opening weekend? A sequel to an already questionably good original? Don’t think so.
Special Mention: We are happy to see cutie Dave Franco here again, even if it’s behind bars.

GIRL MEETS WORLD

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Topanga’s momentary reveal!
Weirdest thing: Cory’s nose?
Did they show too much? No, we want way more!
Watch the premiere or TiVo it? Watch it, definitely. This has been 15 years in the making…

NEIGHBORS

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Zac Efron topless, whom Seth Rogen refers to as looking like “something a gay guy designed in a laboratory.”
Weirdest thing: Dave Franco trying to impersonate Al Pacino.
Did they show too much? Absolutely. This is a red band trailer, and between the dildo fight and a naked Seth Rogen, the gross-out moments are plentiful.
Worth seeing it opening weekend? Go for it!

DOLPHIN TALE 2

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Definitely the sea turtle and the pelican.
Weirdest thing: The shot at the end with the big dolphin and the little dolphin holding ‘fins’.
Did they show too much? Nope, but if you want to know more you can google the ‘true’ story.
Worth seeing it opening weekend? As far as sequels go, we’re going to go with this one being rentable. Or Video-On-Demandable.
Special Mention: Nice seeing Mae Whitman here, of Parenthood and Arrested Development fame.

WHEN THE GAME STANDS TALL

Most exciting thing in the trailer: The football!
Weirdest thing: The title card that says, “It’s not about sports”
Did they show too much? Not really—it isn’t super clear, but this one doesn’t seem to be about the underdogs winning. It’s about a high school football team with the longest winning streak in history—151 wins—so…this is about the overdogs winning?
Worth seeing it opening weekend? If you like sports movies that are “not about sports” then this is definitely your ticket.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Wow that’s really hard. The entire friggin thing!!

Weirdest thing: The sentinel’s eyeballs look pretty silly/weird, no?

Did they show too much? No. Like a good trailer, this leaves us wanting more!

Worth seeing it opening weekend? Uh, duh: this film marks the return of the original franchise director Bryan Singer, plus a union of both the original ‘older’ cast and the younger set from First Class. Sign us up!

Special Mention: While the snippets alluding to new mutants are tantalizingly short, we do get a nice mini-intro to the origin of Quicksilver, aka Pietro Maximoff.

For those of you still mourning the death of Jean Gray/Phoenix from the original X-Trilogy, fret not! We have the exclusive teaser below for Season 2 of Eli Roth’s creepy Netflix thriller HEMLOCK GROVE!

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Famke Janssen!

Weirdest thing: Famke Janssen.

Did they show too much? At 13 seconds, this is the classic definition of a teaser. And we love the music and the graphics.

Worth watching asap? If you liked the first season…(it had a polarizing effect, so only some of you will bother with this. But we think you should!

IF I STAY

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Tough to say – this Sliding Doors meets The Lovely Bones formula has been done before. But gotta love Chloe.

Weirdest thing: Buying the actress who plays Chloe’s mother as Chloe’s mother.

Did they show too much? Yes, since it seems like something we’ve seen already.

Worth seeing it opening weekend? For those who loved the YA book by Gayle Forman, absolutely.

THE SIGNAL

Most exciting thing in the trailer: The Matrix-style Laurence Fishburne reveal.

Weirdest thing: The beautiful, evocative cinematography.

Did they show too much? Since it’s difficult to discern exactly what this film is (Andromeda Strain ripoff? Yet another creative take on zombie genre? Aliens? Dystopia?), the answer is no. This was the breakout sci-fi hit at Sundance, and we want to know more.

Worth seeing it opening weekend? That depends—are you geek enough?
