MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN
Summed up as: Ansel Elgort headlines a cast including Adam Sandler, Will Peltz and Judy Greer, about how lost we’ve become in this digital age.
Coolest thing about the trailer: While we’ve seen social criticisms of social media and handheld smartphones before, as well as those nifty little animated bubbles floating above people’s heads, this film promises to be a probing look into what makes us tick underneath all the muck.
Did they show too much? Not even close. Without even a snippet of dialogue, we can’t wait for more.
Worth seeing opening weekend? This is from Jason Reitman, who directed Anna Kendrick and George Clooney in Up In The Air…so, yes.
OUIJA
Summed up as: Olivia Cooke and Daren Kagasoff join a gang of unsuspecting but hot ‘teens’ for the next rock ‘em sock ‘em horror film timed perfectly for Halloween.
Coolest thing about the trailer: Aside from the use of the Ouija board itself, not much – all the scares here seem like they’ve been done before.
Did they show too much? Yes. The dental floss/mouth sewn shut moment is sure to be one of the film’s most frightening set pieces.
Worth seeing opening weekend? Not really. Don’t they have apps for Ouija boards now?
THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA
Summed up as: Chloe Moretz and Darren Criss provide voices for this original-looking anime from Japan, about a childless old man who discovers a princess imprisoned inside a chopped piece of bamboo, and raises her as his own.
Coolest thing about the trailer: The unique pencil-drawn look of the animation.
Did they show too much? Not enough. We love the teasing aspect of it, but where is she running to? Even a hint would be nice.
Worth seeing opening weekend? We’re intrigued…
INNOCENCE
Summed up as: We’re wondering why this one has flown so under the radar: Jane Mendelsohn’s YA vampire yarn is being turned into a movie.
Coolest thing about the trailer: How much it seems like a throwback to Suspiria, the 70s horror classic about a girl enrolling at a private school in Italy full of witches (here, it’s New York and vampires).
What we’re worried about: After the disaster that was Vampire Academy—another vampires-at-school tale based on a book—is this really necessary? Then again, they might do it right this time.
Worth seeing opening weekend? Let Rotten Tomatoes be the judge.
WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD
Summed up as: Shailene Woodley. Shailene Woodley. Shailene Woodley. Does it make a difference what the film is about?
Coolest thing about the trailer: Aside from the gorgeous face and period hairstyles of the above-mentioned ingénue, we also kinda like the soundtrack. And the fact that this is by Gregg Araki.
Other cool thing: The heavy presence of Angela Basset (we love her too).
Worth seeing opening weekend? This one is for the art-house crowd. If that’s you then go to it!
THE FACTORY
Summed up as: A serial killer yarn in the tradition of Silence of the Lambs, with John Cusack, The DUFF’s Mae Whitman, and Dexter’s Jennifer Carpenter.
Most annoying thing about the trailer: The weird mix of title cards and typical movie-trailer voiceover.
Creepiest thing: “What happens to the babies?”
Worth seeing opening weekend? This one was made for video in 2012, which makes you wonder how good it is…but the trailer sure is creepy! Pregnant women singing in dark basements!
YOUNG ONES
Summed up as: This second trailer for a western about a world without water gives glorious amounts of screen time to favorite Young Adult actors Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
Coolest thing about the trailer: The performances. This one looks moody and intense.
Weirdest thing: That robot thing walking along the mountain.
Worth seeing opening weekend? For these guys? Sure!
THE DEVIL’S HAND
Summed up as: Yet another occult thriller. This one with girls who look Amish. Really, it’s getting hard to keep track…
Coolest thing about the trailer: Most of this has been done before, but the girl being dragged upwards from the well seems inventive.
We’re wondering: What will the twist be this time?
Worth seeing opening weekend? Only if you really like this particular kind of horror movie. Or just stay in and stream The Exorcist.
QUEEN OF CARTHAGE
Summed up as: Gorgeous hottie Shiloh Fernandez wrote, produced and stars in this engrossing tale of an American drifter in New Zealand.
Coolest thing about the trailer: Again, we are thrilled to see the Whale Rider herself, Keisha Castle-Hughes, all grown up.
Did they show too much? No, just the perfect amount (well, maybe not the gun moment).
Worth seeing opening weekend? Looks interesting. We’ll wait for trailer #2.
