THE YA GUIDE TO BIBLE ENTERTAINMENT

Noah is out folks, and the jury is in: in spite of some really out-there elements, most people (critics and viewers alike) think the film is a worthy piece of entertainment. It’s rare that a biblical story is committed to the screen, and in such a grand way. But this is only the beginning: Christian Bale and Aaron Paul will be playing Moses and Joshua, respectively, in a huge Ridley Scott-directed account of the story of Exodus, out later this year. Gearing up for the spring holidays of Passover and Easter, here is a brief recap of some other pieces of Bible-themed entertainment and how they’ve fared over the years:

The one and only. As old as it is, people of all ages are familiar with this heavy handed but pretty epic rendering of the story of the Exodus from Egypt. Let’s see if Christian Bale can do it even better.

Rugrats passoverA Rugrats Passover

This series tried a lot of interesting things throughout its run, mostly with successful results. This hilarious episode, which closed the third season, received some of the highest ratings to date for the animated series, and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy.

This overlooked but rather cute Easter Bunny movie gives us a fish-out-of-water scenario with EB (voiced by Russell Brand), son to the famous rabbit who just wants to be a drummer. Look for cutie James Marsden here too.

Jesus Christ SuperstarJesus Christ Superstar

Based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice rock opera, this lavish 70s musical film is ripe for the remaking – knowing Hollywood, something should be in the works soon. Part Hair, part Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, this is a throwback to a fun time, with an interesting biblical subtext.
