Now that Oscar buzz is reaching peak levels, YA would like to chime in about a category that gets considerably less coverage: that being, Best Song. While Disney has historically dominated this category (and they are present yet again this year, with the animated hit film Frozen), there are some other catchy contenders worth taking a look at (and listen to!):
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – “I See Fire” – Ed Sheeran
Melodic, deliberate, urgent, powerful: these are good descriptors for this theme song, as well as the film for which it was written. Brit crooner Ed Sheeran supplies the vocals against a robust string-heavy backdrop to create a very cinematic sound.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – “Atlas” – Coldplay
Who can deny Chris Martin’s irresistible vocals? Coldplay’s characteristically haunting and atmospheric sound shines here, as the featured song for this second Hunger Games installment.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones – “When the Darkness Comes” – Colbie Caillat
Colbie Caillat’s soft and hypnotic voice is the perfect accompaniment to this primarily acoustic song, the centerpiece on the Mortal Instruments soundtrack.
One Chance – “Sweeter than Fiction” – Taylor Swift
Singer-powerhouse Taylor Swift lends her feel-good sound to One Chance, a feel-good film about one man’s journey to stardom and self-validation. A truly catchy and frothy entry.
Frozen – “Let it Go” – Demi Lovato
And then there’s the Disney entry, sung by none other than Demi Lovato. Arguably the one to beat, this tune features a Disney-fied message of self-empowerment that only helps its Oscar chances.
