YEM Exclusive Interview | with Gossip Girl cast members Savannah Lee Smith and Zión Moreno

Fans of Gossip Girl, we have even more news to share! Not only do we have an exclusive interview with a cast member of Gossip Girl, but we also have two! We have Savannah Lee Smith who stars as Monet de Haan, and we also have Zión Moreno who stars as Luna La. These two ladies will be giving us details about the difference between Seasons 1 and 2, what’s new for their characters, and more. But before we can even start with this interview, here is some brief context and information about the show first.

We have already discussed Gossip Girl’s synopsis and origins from a different article, but here’s a refresher for those who require it. Gossip Girl is an American teen drama series that first originated from the novel written by Cecily von Ziegesar. The story revolves around the lives of the most attractive, affluent, and privileged teens who live in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, and these teens are all watched under the all-seeing eyes of Gossip Girl. For those who require a more in-depth explanation of the show’s origins, be sure to read and watch the article where we interview stars: Eli Brown, Grace Duah, and Whitney Peak.

This rendition of Gossip Girl initially started in 2021, and it serves as the sequel to the original, 2007 show from the CW Network. The show may be carrying the same name as its earlier rendition, but numerous differences drive home how different the shows are when compared to each other. The affluent and attractive teens, Gossip Girl’s narrator starred by Kristen Bell, and the overall setting of New York City remains the same, the show emphasizes how different social media and the landscape are now, compared to its earlier show. Isn’t it interesting to see how much of a change has happened to the show because of the coming years, despite it being the same show?

And now, let’s introduce these young ladies. First up we have Zión Moreno, a former model, Mexican-American actress, and writer. For those who know her exclusively as Luna La from Gossip Girl, you might recognize her in her other appearances in media: the show Claws as Selena, Control Z where she stars as Isabela, and her role as Fleur in K-12. And finally, we have Savannah Lee Smith, an American actress who is renowned for her role as Monet in the show. For a little background on her, Savannah attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and starred in the main role of Samantha Abrams in Something Here.

We first ask the two how Season 2 is different from Season 1, whether it was for the character for themselves on a personal level. Savannah starts by mentioning that for her character Monet, it’s very different. She mentions that she had more screen time with different characters compared to Season 1, such as with Whitney, and has mentioned that the power trip that Monet was going through was fun. She also mentioned that it was great to flesh out Monet’s character and that the writers explored her character development, such as her relationship with her parents. Zión continues by saying that Luna is the same as Monet in terms of how different it is between Seasons 1 and 2. In Season 1, Zión mentions that both her and Savannah’s characters were “attached to the hip”, but thanks to Season 2, brings the two characters to other members of the cast and explores different avenues between them. Zión does mention that she felt a little sad since she’s away from Savannah in Season 2, but she is excited to have fans watch Luna interact with more members of the cast, such as Max, and develop according to Zión, a “beautiful, non-transactional relationship”.

We would like to thank these two members for their time with us on this interview, and we enjoyed spending some time with them, their thoughts on the changes to their characters between seasons, and more.
