YEM’s TOP 5 New Shows of 2022

2022 has ushered in a plethora of new and exciting YA programming. YEM has taken notice of these shows and has compiled a list of some of our favorites.

1. Heartstopper

The webcomic and graphic novel of the same name by Alice Oseman inspired the British coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama television series Heartstopper, which can be found on Netflix. The series, which Oseman created, focuses on Charlie, a gay high school student who develops feelings for classmate Nick Nelson. YEM did an interview with William Gao here, and Corinna Brown here.

2. Prisma

Prisma focuses on the friendships between Andrea and Marco, identical twins who appear alike but have different outlooks on life. The series also focuses on their friends who, like the twins, search for the meaning of life.

3. Heartbreak High

Hartley High school student Amerie must mend her reputation with the help of her new friends, the school outcasts Quinni and Darren, as she explores romance, sex, intimacy, and tragedy.

4. The Summer I Turned Pretty

Based on a series of popular YA adult books, the series tells the story of Belly, who meets up with her friends and brothers for an annual summer trip to their family friends’ beach house, where she becomes the object of affection for two people.

5. Vampire Academy

Vampire Academy tells the tale of students who attend a prestigious boarding school. But St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t your typical school; it’s in a secret location where half-human teenagers are trained to guard fully-fledged vampires and where vampires are taught the arts of magic!
