The Carrie Diaries Recap

Carrie Diaries image“Sex and the City” fans are anxiously awaiting Season 2 of “The Carrie Diaries” for MANY reasons but one stands above all others: the introduction of the inimitable Samantha Jones. The CW cast newcomer Lindsey Gort to portray the role originated by Kim Cattrall. Judging the above picture, she definitely is the right girl to fill those stilettos.

“The Carrie Diaries” costume designer Eric Daman teased out the all-important meeting of the two fashionistas. Daman went on record saying: “[Samantha’s] a girl from Florida, and she’s not the couture cougar we know Samantha Jones to be. She has a different background than the other girls, plus she’s a bit older…She’s related to [Carrie’s nemesis] Donna LaDonna, which is how she gets introduced to Carrie. They meet up in Manhattan where Sam’s part of the music scene, and I can’t give too much away about the plot line, but it’s very exciting.”

He also gave a little insight into Samantha’s character. In ‘Sex and the City,’ she was always a powerful professional, even if she pushed the edge a little bit with her fashion choices. Here, without the constraints of the corporate world, we see a little more rock-n-roll side of Samantha. “When we met Samantha in ‘Sex and the City,’ she’s older and her style’s more elevated, but in ‘The Carrie Diaries,‘ she’s in fringed T-shirts and leather skirts and layers of chunky studded belts,” Daman says. “She’s growing up in the rock world, getting her first taste of power, and the power suits she wears in the ’90s are definitely a carryover of those from the ’80s. Most people stop evolving fashion-wise when they think they’ve hit their peak, and I think Samantha did that. Her look always had that ’80s throwback, and I think that’s because that era was her fashion heyday. In ‘The Carrie Diaries,’ Carrie’s coming into herself and experimenting, while Samantha’s character is already very established when we meet her. She’s the Samantha Jones we know with tons of wit and sass…She doesn’t mind showing a little skin, while Carrie is just starting to try out that sort of thing. Samantha’s way of dressing –and being — is definitely going to have an affect on Carrie. I think Carrie’s signature black bra and the tank tops from the original series are a nod to Samantha’s style.”

And now that Carrie will have just returned from her first summer living in Manhattan, we’re sure to see some of that more adult influence. Daman finished with “We’re going to grow Carrie up a little bit. She’ll experiment with body-con, which is inspired by Samantha. You’ll see trends from the ’80s that are really current now like crop tops, dresses with cutouts, and sheer blouses with bras underneath. And it all has something to do with Carrie spending her summer in the city. Your first summer in the city will definitely have an effect on your style!”

“The Carrie Diaries” returns for Season two on Friday, Oct. 25, on the CW. Check local listings for times.
