Gorgeous, throaty, weighted, soulful…all these adjectives and more can be used to describe the phenomenal young songstress Birdy, who sings well beyond her 17 years on what is already her second studio album Fire Within.
After winning “Open Mic UK” in 2008 at the ripe old age of 12, this talented singer/songwriter broke on the scene with the international hit “Skinny Love”, a cover from Bon Iver (which went on to be featured in The Vampire Diaries episode “The Sun Also Rises”). Soon after, her self-titled debut album met with comparable success in 2011, with more of her singles ending up on TV and even on the first Hunger Games soundtrack.
But it’s with Fire Within that Birdy is finally hitting her stride and gaining notoriety on US shores as well, something she has long deserved. In “Wings”, the first single off the album, she sings of hope and love with a melodic and beautifully moody video to accompany it. Part Imogen Heap, part Adele, part something all her own, Birdy has the lasting smoky vocals that stand out and leave an impression. We can’t wait to hear and see more from her.
