ABOUT THE ALBUM: MGMT – the group comprised of Andrew Van Wyngarden (vocals, guitars) and Ben Goldwasser (synths and samples) has really pioneered the reemergence of synth into pop and can definitely lay claim to being a major trailblazer on the charts today. That said, their last album, Congratulations, didn’t receive the same type of heat their debut, Oracular Spectacular did. The reasons why are unclear, since it was a solid effort, but some pointed to the lack of the upbeat, hyper-catchy tracks Oracular was filled with. Their forthcoming album, entitled MGMT, is sure to be a head scratcher at times. The duo has copped to not wanting to make conventional music and good on them for it. Goldwasser said “Something that’d be fun to do is have a decent number of songs on the album that can easily be extended or have sections that could turn into a really trance-y, repetitive thing live.” So we can expect a little more trap/trance vibe on this record, for sure. The duo has also openly stated that R.E.M has been a big influence in this album, so expect some serious retro-throwback vibes. Regardless, this album is sure to inspire a slew of remixes and mashups that will populate the e-charts well through the winter. Look for MGMT on 9/17/13.

SINGLE SPOTLIGHT: “Alien Days” is ethereal in a way that almost makes it seem like a song out of a musical. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It definitely has trance influences and is sure to be a hit when performed live.
