A new year means new music! We’ve been pressing repeat on Joshua Bassett’s new hit single Lie Lie Lie. The song is a feisty number, calling out an unnamed person for some shady shenanigans. Lie Lie Lie has the vibe of many songs about the aftermath of a breakup. A lot like Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” Charlie Puth’s “Attention,” and Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself.”
In the first verse, Joshua comes in strong, singing, “So they told me all the things that you said/Running all over my name, oh-oh-oh/And you’re acting, oh, so innocent/Like I’m the only one to blame.” The chorus also doesn’t pull any punches as Joshua belts out the catchy lyrics, “I know you’re lying through your teeth/You told them lies that you told me/I’ve had enough of it this time.” The music video that accompanied the single shows Joshua strumming his guitar in the desert. The scene is as stripped down and stark as his blunt lyrics.
There’s been speculation about “Lie Lie Lie” and the person Joshua was referring to in his song. Just the other week, Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series costar, dropped her own single “Driver’s License,” which quickly went viral. (Check out our review of the song here). Many thought Olivia was referencing a past relationship with Joshua in her song. And fans thought the same when they heard Joshua’s new song.
But the story didn’t hold up, at least on Joshua’s end. Lie Lie Lie was written before he began working on HSMTMTS. Joshua also explained the motivation behind the song in an Instagram story. He said, “I wrote Lie Lie Lie after I found out a friend had been lying about me behind my back for a long time. It always sucks to hear that someone you thought you could trust would throw you under the bus when it benefits them. It happens to all of us, and I think all you can do is seek out people that build you up rather than tear you down.”
We’re still not sure when season 2 of HSMTMTS will premiere on Disney+. But we’ve got our fingers crossed that the wait won’t be long. Joshua and Olivia’s characters Ricky and Nini are in a precarious place in their relationship. And the whole will-they, won’t-they tension has us on the edge of our seat! Of course, we can’t wait to see the entire cast reunited for the new season and regale us with a whole new lineup of songs. Julia Lester, who portrayed Ashlyn in the series, gave us an interview last year about her experience on HSMTMTS. She even told us her excitement about season 2. Check it out here!
It was already revealed that season 2 would see the cast in another classic Disney production: Beauty and the Beast! We can’t wait to see the theater club put on a rousing rendition of Be Our Guest. It’s the perfect way to offset this year’s quarantine blues. But the biggest question on our minds remains: what will the cast list look like for the new musical? You don’t have to wait to find out what we think.
