“I was having a pinch me moment the whole time.” Max Donovan talks working with cast members of That ‘70s Show while on set of sequel That ‘90s Show

It’s May 4, also known as Star Wars Day, and to celebrate we are bringing back an exclusive interview with Max Donovan, who stars as Nate Runck on That ‘90s Show, which contains Star Wars references throughout the first season. We got to chat with Max about being a That ‘70s Show fan to now starring in the sequel, the audition process, and his off-set relationships with his cast members.

That ‘90s Show follows Leia Forman, the teenage daughter of Eric Forman and Donna Pinciotti, as she bonds with other teenagers during the summer of 1995 in Wisconsin while living with her grandparents, Kitty and Red Forman. The show takes place 15 years after the events of That ‘70s Show. In addition to Max, the show stars Debra Jo Rupp as Kitty, Callie Haverda as Leia, and more. Max plays Nate, who is Gwen’s easygoing and goofy older half-brother and Nikki’s boyfriend. The show was renewed for a second season just one month after it premiered.

For any Star Wars fans, Eric Forman’s Star Wars obsession on That ‘70s Show was made evident in That ‘90s Show, as he named his own daughter after Princess Leia. Eric makes a cameo in the pilot episode and his deep love for Star Wars remains.

Max said he and his family were huge fans of That ‘70s Show and have binged it multiple times, so being cast as Nate in That ‘90s Show was a dream come true.

“There were always moments [in That ‘70s Show] in a lot of the characters that I could relate to.”

In addition to That ‘90s Show, Max has also starred in the Disney series Gabby Duran & The Unsittables and Good Kids. Max said it was cool going from Disney to a Netflix show.

“It was really magical and also very surreal, I was having like a pinch me moment the whole time.”

Max revealed to us that the cast got the scripts for each episode a week before instead of all the scripts all at once, so they never knew what to expect, which made every single day filming that much more exciting.

“We never knew what was coming next. It was always a bit of a shock.”

[The cast of That ‘70s Show] are all amazing people, and they just took us right under wing and brought us into their traditions.”

“Everyone is like family now, the whole cast was just really lucky and I think we became that way pretty quickly.”
