Arrow points to some exciting new superheroes

Superhero fever is alive and well both at the box office (Thor: The Dark World out-earned the original box-office smash Thor in just three weeks) and on TVs everywhere: Arrow is still one of the hottest shows on the CW, and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC enjoyed huge ratings for its premiere along with continued success.

Arrow in particular is one of the most popular shows to return this season. Looking ahead, the super-series is in the process of introducing new heroes straight out of the comic books. A recap of who to love, and who to look out for:

Grant Gustin on ArrowTHE FLASH
Known as Barry Allen in the Justice League comic books, the man who would become The Flash is a police scientist who was ‘struck’ with super-speed after being bathed by chemicals that fell from a shelf that was, in turn, struck by lightning. For Grant Gustin, the actor (previously on 90210 and Glee) playing the new hero, the news only gets better—a spinoff for his character was recently approved, so after two introductory episodes on The Arrow, watch out for more of The Flash on his own show!

Steven R. McQueen working out in Nightwing tshirtNIGHTWING
One of the most fascinating and varied superheroes, Nightwing has been linked to the universes of Batman, Superman and The Green Arrow. The Nightwing that concerns us, then, is Dick Grayson, formerly Robin to Batman, who then strikes out on his own. Steven R. McQueen, aka The Vampire Diaries’ Jeremy, recently tweeted a photo of himself in a Nightwing t-shirt working out to get into superhero mode. All we can say is, we’re excited!

(Side note: as for the other Nightwing, Adam Driver of GIRLS is rumored to be taking on the role of the same name in the much-hyped Batman vs. Superman…)

Colton Haynes as Roy HarperROY HARPER
As previously reported, Colton Haynes has graduated from Teen Wolf to Arrow, where he portrays this would-be superhero who is a lot more than he may seem. With no superhuman powers, Harper is nonetheless an expert marksman and occasional petty thief, with a quick wit and mysterious aura to match.

Caity Lotz as Black Canary

BLACK CANARY
In a departure from the comic book lore, Arrow featured Sara Lance as this interesting little kitten whip of a heroine in season 2 – usually the honor goes to her sister Dinah Laurel. While the Black Canary is known to possess a sonic scream (not unlike X-Men’s Banshee), here she is armed with a handheld ‘sonic boom device’. Playing her is Caity Lotz, a scintillating blond who has previously appeared on Mad Men and Law & Order.
