Echosmiths Keep It Fresh

Echosmith are an indie-rock band hailing from southern California.  The band is comprised of siblings Jamie, Noah, Graham, and Sydney, and have been together since 2009.  In 2012 they signed to Warner Brothers Records which is a big deal considering that the youngest member Graham is a tender 14 years old.  Their awesome debut album Talking Dreams dropped in 2013 so be sure to check it out as well as the episode of Teen Wolf that they featured on!

Young Adult Magazine: You’re all siblings.  Were you encouraged by your parents to learn to play instruments at an early age?

Echosmith: We grew up in a house where music was very accessible, and we all chose to try it at different times. We weren’t told to do it, for us it just seemed like the normal thing to do

YA: Name your biggest historical musical influences.

ES: We love music from all time periods. We love everything from the Zombies to the Smiths. We really connect with 80s new wave musically though cause we as musicians love the way those artists molded the different melodies they were playing together.

YA: Who’s the main songwriter in the group?

ES: We all write together, we don’t designate any job to one person so that always keeps it fresh.

YA: How did the Teen Wolf collaboration come about?

ES: We’ve been wanting to have one of our songs on that show for a while now, cause it has such a large and strong following. They ended up choosing bright, and we are very thankful that we got to be a part of it.

YA: You’ve achieved a lot as a band considering how young you all are. What’s the proudest moment of your career so far?

ES: We have so many! But I think our last show of 2013 really showed us what a great year we had, and what can come up next!

YA: One of the songs on your album is entitled Cool Kids.  Who do you consider to be the cool kids in the music industry right now?  Who are you listening to?

ES: We love everything from The National, to Chvrches, to Foals. So many great bands are putting out records and touring now.

YA: Which Teen Wolf do you like more: Michael J. Fox or Tyler Posey?

ES: We met Tyler Posey yesterday, and he was a cool guy. He’s very into music so we enjoyed talking to him. So I gotta say Tyler!

YA: Guys, if you got to have a girlfriend who looked like Allison but you also had to have those gnarly sideburns, would you think it was a fair trade?

ES: There was a time when gnarly sideburns were seen as manly and classy. Lets bring that back. So yes, fair trade.

YA: The fact that your family must bring extra pressure to bear sometimes.  Have there been any fist fights or hair pulling?

ES: Haha we aren’t very violent people. But I think any band becomes a family after a certain amount of time, and that always brings some fights. We run into our problems but they never last very long

YA: What does 2014 have in store for Echosmith in terms of musical releases?

ES: Not any new music releases on the horizon for this year, we are mainly focusing on our record we put out last October, but we are always creating so you never know

YA: When and where can I catch you live?

ES: We are currently doing a college tour on the east coast and the Midwest. But we are planning on touring the entire year so check echosmith.com for when we’ll come on over to your city.
