New Music Friday: ‘Sticking by Your Friends’

Getting through this time without the comfort of new HSMTMTS episodes can be tough. Below are some comforting songs about standing by your friends to help you pull through.

1. ‘One Call Away’ by Charlie Puth

Saving the best for first here. This modern icon’s ode to always being there for your best friend, is a melodic and emotional journey that anyone can relate to.

2. ‘You’re My Best Friend’ by Queen

An oldie but a goodie, this song’s title says it all. The iconic pop group gives a simple but energized ode to your best bud. One of the band’s most beloved works, its popularity and relevance will never die.

If you’re a fan of BTS, or just K-Pop in general, you’ll surely want to tune in to this amazing lyrical tale of two friends showing the true strength of their bond.

4. ‘We Belong Together’ by Randy Newman

We’ve got an Academy Award-winner here. This Randy Newman song from the beloved sequel Toy Story 3 (2010) perfectly encapsulates that incredible feeling of when your relationship with your best friend just seems meant to be. A fitting theme for a series about such an eclectic group of toy friends.

5. ‘Somebody Tell Me’ by Tyler Glenn

Known best as the theme song for the hit series Love, Victor, this banger is great for when you’re going through a rough patch in life. Because sometimes, all you need is someone to stand by you and let you know everything will turn out okay in the end.

6. ‘Friend Like Me’ (performed by Robin Williams, written by Alan Menken & Howard Ashman)

You can’t make a list of songs about friendship without this classic. An Oscar-nominee from Disney’s 1992 classic Aladdin, it’s a short, sweet, to-the-point tune about that friend you have who no one else could compare to. And it doesn’t hurt to have the late, great Robin Williams’ zany comedic energy, celebrity impressions, and passion infused into it, either.

7. ‘Good to Be Alive’ by Meghan Trainor

Created for the soundtrack to The Peanuts Movie (2015), Meghan Trainor’s song about appreciating life and being in-the-moment is perfect for when you just need a reminder of what (and who) you already have, when looking to the future seems too daunting.

8. ‘Good As Hell’ by Lizzo

If you like Lizzo, and you’re going through a breakup, this Lizzo hit is the perfect pick-me-up to help you during that rough patch.

9. ‘Hope ur ok’ by Olivia Rodrigo

If you’re a fan of Olivia Rodrigo, this tender and supportive work from the HSMTMTS star is all about just checking in with your friends, and making sure they know you’re there for them if they need it.

10. ‘Best Friends’ by 5 Seconds of Summer

From this Australian sensation of a band, comes a very straightforward and powerful song about, what else, your best friend and the bond y’all share. It’s great for expressing your gratitude towards each other.

11. ‘Somehow You Do’ by Reba McEntire

A Best Original Song nominee earlier this year, the country legend’s contribution to the film Four Good Days (2022) sings about being able to survive the hard times in your life. And what better support system to have than a great friend?

12. ‘Count On Me’ by Bruno Mars

If you want to show your friends they can depend on you, maybe play them this masterpiece from modern pop legend Bruno Mars.

13. ‘Stand By You’ by Rachel Platten

If ‘Fight Song’ was all about discovering your personal inner strength, this is a great song about choosing to stand by your friends when they’re struggling. If you want to show your support for your closest amigos, this is totally suited for that purpose.

14. ‘Everybody Needs a Best Friend’ (Performed by Norah Jones, written by Seth MacFarlane)

A best friend is one of those things that we all require in life. This Oscar-nominated piece from the buddy comedy Ted (2012) touches beautifully on that primal need for platonic companionship, and being happy to be someone else’s pal.

15. ‘My Funny Friend and Me’ by Sting

You’ve probably seen, or at least heard of, the Disney film The Emperor’s New Groove (2000). But you may not remember this original ballad from the soundtrack. A song about having that one special friend who understands and accepts you, warts and all, it’s an often-overlooked track with a timeless theme.

16. ‘Hey Brother’ by Avicii

While originally intended as a song about showing your siblings what they mean to you, this selection from the late Avicii can be ideal for doing the same for your best friend as well, regardless of gender.

17. ‘Fix You’ by Coldplay

This song from the ever-renowned band is great because it’s not only about being there for your friends, but showing that you’ll do anything to help them get better when they’re feeling down. A sign of true friendship, if ever there was one.

18. ‘I’m Only Me When I’m With You’ by Taylor Swift

In life, there’s so much pressure we receive from the outside world, to conform to a certain, murky set of expectations of who we should be, and to mold ourselves in a way that lets us be part of the ‘it crowd’. It’s so rare and special to find that special friend who we can totally let our unique personalities shine around, and Grammy-winner Taylor Swift’s song emphasizes that incredibly well.

19. ‘Hey Girl’ by Lady Gaga and Florence Welsh

Speaking more to female friendship in particular, this track is all about that deepest of love you have for your bestie; undying and unconditional. And that’s a special and rare commodity.

20. ‘Everything is Awesome’ by Tegan and Sera

Now, isn’t this one catchy? The Oscar-nominated theme from The Lego Movie (2014) is an earworm of a tune, about how in life, everything is made better by being part of a team, a group of people who you can rely on, and who can rely on you, too.
