New Music Fridays: Taylor Swift Best of the Best

Calling all Swifty’s! The time has come. Young Entertainment has finally created the best of the best Taylor Swift playlist. Not to mention “You Belong With Me” came out on April 19th, 2009, so the timing is perfect.

So what is the story of You Belong With Me? Well, like most, it began with heartache and longing. The song itself was inspired by a male friend of Taylor’s who was having an argument with his girlfriend over the phone. Taylor is the protagonist who has an undeniable love for this male friend but is too insecure and thinks he is out of her reach. By the end of the song and as seen in the music video, the male friend finally comes to his senses and sees Taylor as much more than a friend.

You Belong With Me received numerous Grammy nominations like Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The single also reached the top ten on charts and received sales certifications in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. In the U.S., driven by non-country airplay, it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the first country song to reach number one on the Billboard Radio Songs chart. The single was certified 7× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The music video is ICONIC with Taylor playing both the jealous girlfriend and the insecure best friend. The video even won Best Female Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

Taylor has been gracing the stage, radio waves, and now streaming platforms since 2006 with her self-titled debut album, TAYLOR SWIFT. The curly-haired songbird inspired young people to let their emotions fly with each of her melodic tunes. Even with her transition from country to pop, Taylor has excelled in everything she pursues.
