Last night, the second season of “The Bold Type” began with a two hour premiere on Freeform. And while we missed our three girls from Scarlett- Jane, Kat, and Sutton- there was one girl who left fans wanting more.
Adena, played by Nikohl Boosheri, returned as a series regular. And it’s about time! Fans will recall the addictive first season of the show, where we met Adena in episode one.
Adena is a character that hadn’t been seen before on television. Not only is she a lesbian, but she is also Muslim, and lives openly about her sexuality and religion. Adena’s confidence is empowering, and strikes a cord with viewers.
Her unapologetic attitude catches the attention of Kat (played by Aisha Dee). While the two begin as friends, Kat can no longer keep her feelings a secret. In episode 4, Kat professes her feelings for Adena, and the two share a long awaited kiss. From then on, the two characters became the show’s most popular ship: Kadena!
YEM spoke with Nikohl last year about her groundbreaking character, and she couldn’t be more thrilled to bring Muslim and LGBT representation to television. “I mean, how exciting right?” she told YEM. “To play such a complex character that is complicated and not perfect but is strong and empowered. I felt that it was a great opportunity to do something that I don’t think has been done before.”
In last night’s two-hour season premiere, both episodes were heavy on Kadena feels. After returning from traveling together, Kat and Adena are now living together-not to mention having some cute lunch dates and being each other’s plus-one to work parties. And the season premiere concluded with a big relationship step for the girls: meeting the parents! But with every stressful first for the couple, Kat and Adena got through it and came out stronger. Kadena truly is the power couple that fans have been waiting for, and it’s certain that more of their cutest moments are to come throughout season two.
