In the film Adam the First, Oakes Fegley plays a teen on a mission to find his biological father. It’s dramatic and suspenseful and Oakes worked with stuntmen to hone his equestrian skills. The coming of age film, from writer and director Irving Franco, is set to be released on February 14. We got to chat with Oakes to learn more about the feature film and the wild experiences on set.
“I am always excited to jump into things that are a little bit different than maybe something I’ve done in the past.”
First, let’s set up the plot: Adam finds a piece of paper with a list of names and addresses of men who could possibly be his estranged father. He sets out on a cross-country adventure to track down the men who each have a different lifestyle. In addition to Oakes, the film stars David Duchovny, Larry Pine, T.R. Knight, Eric Hanson, Kim Jackson Harris.
“One thing that Adam learns throughout the course of the film—it might be the most important thing he learns throughout the film—is that you can find comfort and you can find meaning in a lot of different relationships with a lot of different people.”
At 19 years old, Oakes has already starred in many major films in his career. He is known for starring as Pete in Pete’s Dragon from 2016. He also appeared as a young Theo Decker in The Goldfinch from 2019 and Peter Decker in The War with Grandpa from 2020 starring Robert De Niro. A career high was playing Chad Thomas in Steven Spielberg’s film The Fablemans in 2022. Oakes said working with Steven was a dream come true.
Oakes revealed to us that this was his first time riding a horse and handling a gun on camera in Adam the First. The movie was filmed in many locations including Jackson, Mississippi. A unique part of this project was that he had one costume for almost the entire movie, boots and denim.
Because Oakes has starred in many different types of projects, both in film and television, we asked him how he chooses what to work on. He said he picks what he feels connected with.
