Sometimes ‘Pretty Little Liars’ is hard to handle, because breakups hurt and some of them still sting even now.

10. Ella and Byron

“What is it that matters to you because clearly it is not us?”

Oh man. Who didn’t feel bad for Ella when she found out that not only had her husband had an affair but had enlisted her daughter to cover it up. During one of the determining fights, she even found out it was with Meredith, a woman she had befriended. This breakup ended in divorce and some pretty depressed teenagers.

9. Hanna and Caleb

“Are you breaking up with me?”

“You’re not giving me much of a choice are you?”

After ‘A’ causes Caleb’s mom car crash, Hanna fears that her only way to protect Caleb is to keep him in the dark. When he finally gets fed up with the lies, he breaks up with her. Didn’t you just want to shout at your television? Hanna, just tell him the truth. Don’t let him break up with you. Be together forever! Why!

This had a happy reunion soon enough, though. Thank goodness!

8. Ashley and Ted

“We are who we are, Ted.”

It looked like Ashley Marin had found a good one for a while there. Ted was loyal and forgiving, as a pastor should be. They could have gotten through Hanna’s murder trial but Ashley felt too guilty about cheating with Jason DiLaurentis. She felt it was time to walk away and left Ted to drink his coffee alone. Sad face.

7. Mike and Mona

“I didn’t want to drag Mike into my mess, so I let him go.”

Poor Mike. He’s kind of been the puppy who goes where he’s told throughout the series. When Mona accidentally fell for him, while using him to get close to Aria, while she worked for Ezra (we know, we know) she broke up with him to spare him more pain. It was uncharacteristically kind of Mona and showed off her softer side, but poor Mike. We think he’s been though enough.

6. Emily and Paige

“I do forgive you, but I don’t think I could ever trust you again.”

These two have had a few breakups but the worst was when Paige went against Emily’s wishes to fulfill an old vendetta against Alison. Emily felt completely betrayed and ended things, even as Paige begged her not to. It’s hard to feel for bad Paige sometimes, but we couldn’t help but tear up as she watched Emily choose Alison over her.

5. Ella and Zack

“I should have seen this coming. I was too old for him. I was too trusting.”

This was so heartbreaking. Ella finally thought she had her happy ending and Zack turned out to be a sleaze. Not to mention this all came out because he was hitting on Hanna and Aria didn’t believe her. Too much sad and bad to go around. Watching Ella blame herself for another man cheating on her really got to us all.

4. Aria and Ezra

“That’s what I was to you. I was research.”

Oh man, Ezra. That wasn’t right! Everything from the beginning with Aria and Ezra was a lie set up by Ezra to research a book on Alison. It all comes back to her, even Aria’s love life. Aria was not only left heartbroken but stuck on a carnival ride with him as he broke her heart into a million pieces. SMH.

3. Spencer and Toby

“Will you please tell me that what I saw tonight wasn’t real. Please.”

How rough was this? Tobey snuck into Spencer’s house working as “A” and she caught him. He didn’t say anything and disappeared.She was left to deal with the fallout by herself. She couldn’t tell her friends about the person she loved betraying her. As it turns out he was protecting her, but still he could have clued her in, instead of leaving her brokenhearted.

2. Emily and Maya

“It just takes a second for my world to come crumbling down.” ‘Suggestions’ by Orelia

If you weren’t sobbing as those Orelia lyrics came in when Emily learned that Maya was dead you basically don’t have a soul. Maya’s body was taken away in front of her and her friends as Emily sobbed into their arms. This breakup caused by her death was really rough for a lot of reasons. Maya was one of the best characters to ever grace the Pretty Little Liars screen. She’s been sorely missed ever since.

1. Caleb and Hanna (again)

“I’m not going to forget anything.”

When Caleb cries we all cry. It made things even harder that, at the time, we knew he was leaving for good (or was he) because he was getting his own spin off series. Haleb is the ultimate PLL couple and we all wish they would just be happy already. This breakup was especially trying because we had to watch two people who loved each other deeply walk away and we didn’t even truly understand why. Poor Hanna. Poor Caleb. Poor us.
