Never Have I Ever, premiered on Netflix on April 27, 2020, receiving rave reviews. The Lang Fisher and Mindy Kaling-led comedy consisted of 10 episodes. The series has everything: It is charming, funny, and has strong representation. The primary focus of the series follows Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a high-school student balancing the highs and lows of being a teenager. She tries to cope with the tragic loss of her father, and struggles with her relationship with her mother, Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan) in the process.
As if navigating through high school and family tragedy are not already hard enough, Devi works hard to try and reinvent herself. She wants to get more in touch with her Indian identity. In addition to this battle of reinvention, Devi does have her high school crushes, mainly Paxton (Darren Barnet). Paxton fits the stereotypical high school crush: He is the good-looking dream Devi hopes to have a chance with.
After a highly emotional and explosive Season 1 finale, fans have been on the edge of their seats waiting for Season 2 to commence. On July 15, Never Have I Ever will continue its second season on Netflix. Before the new season begins, let’s hope that these burning questions get answered:
Who Will Devi Choose?
A burning question that has lingered in all of our minds: Who will Devi choose? All television shows love a classic love triangle, and Devi finds herself in the middle of one with Paxton and Ben (Jaren Lewison). Paxton, the hunk she has eyed all season long, would appear to be the obvious choice but Devi clearly has feelings for Ben, her nemesis-turned-potential lover. The two share a passionate kiss in the Season 1 finale, sending fans into disarray.
It is clear that Ben and Devi have a spark, but are they willing to begin a relationship? Ben had been her arch-nemesis, and now he appears to be something more. How will Paxton fit into this equation?
Will Devi and Her Mother Move to India?
Fans have witnessed Devi and Nalini’s up and down relationship all season long. Both are grieving the loss of the most important man in their lives: Nalini’s husband and Devi’s father. For someone that has lost a parent, this relationship is extremely relatable.
In an explosive scene, Devi and Nalini have a heated argument, resulting in Devi telling her mother that she wishes she had been the parent that died that night. After that harsh comment and argument, the two eventually make up, with Nalini telling Devi that they will be moving to India.
If Devi and Nalini move to India, this can complicate Devi’s life tremendously. Devi would essentially be starting over – Is that necessarily a bad thing? Devi also has a complex love triangle to untangle; This move would be devastating to potential love interests.
Has Devi Truly Moved on From Her Father’s Death?
In a pivotal scene, Devi scatters her father’s ashes on the beach. This moment signifies Devi making peace with her father’s untimely death. Devi has masked her pain all season long, often substituting her grief with eyeing boys, thinking about sex, and being popular. These are usual trivial high school subjects.
Will Devi finally share her feelings of grief over her father, or will she continue to repress them? Will Devi have the strength to confide in her mother, another close figure who understands the pain of losing someone they love? It is a battle that Devi will continue to learn to cope with.
Will Tennis Legend John McEnroe Return?
Tennis Legend John McEnroe narrated mostly every episode with the exception of one, when Andy Samberg narrated Ben. McEnroe is the voice inside Devi’s head, when she is left with explosive anger.
McEnroe is comic relief in Never Have I Ever. He has left an important impact on the show’s development. Will he return for next season?
