Six By Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim photoStephen Sondheim is known for his immense contributions to musical theatre for over 50 years, and thanks to HBO a documentary about his life will premiere on Monday December 9th at 9pm.

Sondheim grew up with legend Oscar Hammerstein, who taught him the tricks of the trade. As a young man he grew up knowing what his passion in life was, and with that Sondheim became a legend in his own right, creating many beautiful works that all started with West Side Story.

Darren Criss in Six by SondheimAs seen on Glee, West Side Story retells the Romeo and Juliet tale in modern times (60’s NYC). Speaking of Glee, Darren Chris’s Blaine Anderson comes to life again here, with Smash’s Jeremy Jordan and Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera giving it their all, singing ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ as two of the ‘6 by Sondheim’.

The entire doc was enjoyable, but could have been a drop shorter and with more great performances. Dean Jones, a Disney star from back in the 70’s, gives the performance of a lifetime, singing Sondheim’s smash hit ‘Being Alive’ from the show Company, a must watch for any Broadway musical lovers.

And whether you’re a Sondheim fan or not, absolutely everyone is excited for the film version of Into the Woods, which features a dream cast headlined by Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp and Anna Kendrick. Let Sondheim fever continue!
