New Book of the Day – The Falconer

The Falconer

SYNOPSIS:
Edinburgh, Scotland, 1844

Lady Aileana Kameron, the only daughter of the Marquess of Douglas, was destined for a life carefully planned around Edinburgh’s social events – right up until a faery killed her mother.

Now it’s the 1844 winter season and Aileana slaughters faeries in secret, in between the endless round of parties, tea and balls. Armed with modified percussion pistols and explosives, she sheds her aristocratic facade every night to go hunting. She’s determined to track down the faery who murdered her mother, and to destroy any who prey on humans in the city’s many dark alleyways.

But the balance between high society and her private war is a delicate one, and as the fae infiltrate the ballroom and Aileana’s father returns home, she has decisions to make. How much is she willing to lose – and just how far will Aileana go for revenge?

WHY SHOULD YOU CHECK IT OUT
Lady Aileana sounds the Buffy the Vampire Slayer of her universe, if all the early reviews are right! She leads a double life—one part beautiful daughter of a Marquess She uses and creates steampunk weaponry and is trained by the “darkly beautiful” fae Kiaran. Her goal is to avenge her mother’s death at the hands of the dark fae sìthichean, but saving the whole world might have to come first!

The cover is eye-catching, with Aileana’s fiery auburn hair tumbling about her shoulders before the dagger pops into view. The promise is of a feisty, kick-ass heroine.

This is the lovely Elizabeth May’s debut novel, and one we have been hearing about for what feels like forever now! With a mix of fantasy and fae, it’s bound to be a unique addition to the YA steampunk genre!

EARLY REVIEWS SAY…
A riveting world, a fierce heroine, and electrifying action–I burned through this sparkling debut! (Sarah J. Maas, bestselling author of the ‘Throne of Glass’ series)

May brings to life a steampunk version of Victorian Scotland beset by vicious faeries. [F]ans of Gail Carriger’s work in particular should enjoy the combination of steampunk tech and supernatural danger with a multitalented heroine who can hold her [own] against murderous faeries and romantic foils alike.
