As Disney continues to turn each of its animated icons into live-action reimaginations, the new Pinocchio movie is soon to be upon us in 2022. Who is behind the new Pinocchio movie?  

First off, who is at the helm of the new Pinocchio movie? Disney has brought on famed Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis. With Zemeckis having also directed other fantastical adventures such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) and The Polar Express (2004), fans of this story will be excited to see how he updates one of Disney’s most iconic films. The new Pinocchio will be a mix of both live action and animation, with Zemeckis utilizing cutting edge performance capture technology in order to bring the classic characters to life on screen. Alongside Zemeckis is Chris Weitz, who has worked on films such as About a Boy (2002) and  Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). He will be writing the screenplay for the new movie.

What is the original Pinocchio movie about?  

For those who are unfamiliar with the original Pinocchio movie, it follows the story of a wooden puppet who is brought to life by a blue fairy. Pinocchio must then learn to be brave, truthful, and unselfish in order to become a real boy. Along the way, he meets Jiminy Cricket who serves as his conscience, as well as the villainous Stromboli and the temptress, Honest John.

What can we expect from the new Pinocchio movie?  

While not much is known about the plot of the new Pinocchio movie, it is safe to say that we can expect a few changes from the original film. With Zemeckis at the helm, we can expect a more modernized take on the story while still staying true to the heart of the original film.

We can also expect an all-star cast in the new movie. While no official announcements have been made, there are rumors about some heavy hitters being part of the new Pinocchio movie cast.

Who is in the new Pinocchio movie cast?  

While the full cast list has not been released yet, there are rumors of the new Pinocchio movie cast members.

Newcomer Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will be playing the famous Pinocchio- once he gets turned into a real boy, of course. Cynthia Ervo will portray the Blue Fairy who casts this spell on Pinocchio, providing a refreshing bit of diversity in this mainstream reboot. Tom Hanks, who Zemeckis worked with on Polar Express, Forrest Gump and Cast Away, is to portray the old inventor Gepetto, who creates Pinnochio as a wooden doll. There’s no doubt that these are excellent choices for the new Pinocchio movie cast.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who played Phillipe Petit in The Walk (2015) for Mr. Zemeckis, will provide the voice of Jiminy Cricket. Luke Evans, of Beauty and the Beast (2017) and The Hobbit (2012-2014) trilogy, will play the role of The Coachman. And in addition, a new character named Sofia the Seagull will be played by Lorraine Bracco. In our opinion, these are some great people to include in the new Pinocchio movie cast.

Disney’s Pinocchio 2022 Release Date  

The new Pinocchio movie was originally set to be released on November 24th, 2021, but was pushed back due to pandemic-related production delays. The current release date for the movie is set for September 8, 2022. Disney has decided it will go directly to streaming on Disney Plus.
