Top 5 Shows set in NYC

New York City isn’t just one of the most famous settings in the world. It’s also one of the most popular setting on television. Let’s take a look back at some of the most memorable shows set in The Big Apple.

1. Gossip Girl (The CW)

Blair and Serena weren’t the only two iconic characters on Gossip Girl. Another iconic character? New York City. As corny as it sounds, the drama of Gossip Girl fit perfectly into the chic, trendy world of New York City. The Hollywood Elite had nothing on the characters of Gossip Girl- they were the NYC Elite. Glamorous setting meets glamorous characters. Simply put, Gossip Girl outside of New York just wouldn’t be Gossip Girl as we know it.

2. Wizards of Waverly Place (Disney Channel)

Let’s face it, everyone wants to be Alex Russo. She’s got magic powers, a loving family, the cutest love interests, and she lives in the center of New York’s Greenwich Village. (And also, she’s Selena Gomez). The Waverly Sub Shop -complete with subway decor- was the best place to hang out with the Russo family, and to learn some magic lessons when customers weren’t around. With her powers, Alex could transport to anywhere in the entire world, but loved the fast city pace of NYC the best.

3. Friends (NBC)

This one is an oldie, but definitely a goodie- a 90s classic. Six friends living in New York, trying to make it through life by each other’s side. While their apartments were way better looking than actual New York apartments, these friends made us want to live in New York all the same. Nothing says New York like some coffee at Central Perk, or a quick dance in an outdoor fountain.

4. What I Like About You (The WB)

The WB comedy used NYC as a lovely backdrop for season 1, and a sexy backdrop for its later seasons. The show centered on two sisters (Amanda Bynes and Jennie Garth) living together in a New York apartment. One is responsible and organized, the other is fun loving and carefree. The two were different, but loved each other no matter what. And the city was where they both found their independence. New York adventures welcomed both of their different personalities.

5. Girl Meets World (Disney Channel)

New York City was the perfect place for Riley Matthews to learn about the world. As the show began, her fearless best friend, Maya, showed her how to survive on the NY subway. That’s where Riley meets her crush, Lucas. And soon, it’s time for her to meet the world too. Whether it was Riley’s first kiss or Cory and Topanga’s anniversary date, the NY subway was a memorable spot for the Matthew’s family.

Bonus: The Bold Type (Freeform)

Freeform’s newest show takes place in NY, and makes it obvious why NY is called “The City That Never Sleeps.” The three main characters, Jane, Sutton, and Kat, are working at one of NYC’s top magazines. The three girls are finding themselves whether it be in their love lives, their work lives, or just life in general. Life in NY could be pretty stressful. But these three will make it through, by being bold and standing by each other’s side.

Catch the premiere of The Bold Type July 11 at 8pm on Freeform.
