Christina Perri – Burning Gold // The Fosters, Season 2 Episode 7

Christina Perri has a singular voice which suits the scene where Mariana practices various forms of dance. You might know Christina Perri from her massive hit ‘Thousand Years’ which was on the soundtrack for Twilight: Breaking Dawn part 1 (Bella and Edward getting married … bawl!) and went quadruple platinum. This track is pulled from her second studio album, Head or Heart, released in April.

The Night Terrors of 1927 – Dust and Bones // Pretty Little Liars, Season 5 Episode 8

This song is playing in The Brew as Hanna and Zack flirty flirt whilst he serves her a sandwich (hot, right?). The Night Terrors have a pretty standard indie pop sound, and they cite Lana Del Rey and The Weekend as influences, but we are giving them additional props for their awesome band name; apparently it came about from one of them finding the phrase written down in his grandfather’s old journal. Cree-py! If you happen to live in Texas, catch them at Austin City Limits later this year. Here’s the track:

Lou Bega – Mambo no. 5 // Degrassi, Season 13 Episode 39

Imogen cranks this song up so that she, Drew, Dallas and Connor can dance for Becky, who is still upset over the trial. This is such a timeless party song that it’s hard to believe that it was actually first released fifteen years ago! Lou Bega called back the original track from a Cuban track written in 1949, but threw his own something to the mix. Sadly for Lou, this was his biggest hit, although on second thoughts it hit number one in thirteen countries so maybe not such a tragedy. Take a trip down memory lane below:

Hayden Calnin – Coward // Teen Wolf Season 2 Episode 6

This track is playing as Scott and Stiles embark upon the gruesome money counting scene. I don’t know about you, but this song had me unsettled from the very first bars. Hayden Calnin is a 23 year old from Melbourne, Australia, who has already garnered praise for his debut EP, City. He’s currently not set to play any dates stateside, but watch this space! In the meantime, take a listen:

Walking Def – Everything // Degrassi, Season 13 Episode 39

This is the song playing at the school dance as Ali and Dallas question Drew about his feelings for Becky. The song definitely has a high energy, trilling sound and heavy beat that make it an obvious fit for the party scene. Walking Def is an LA based collaboration founded in 2012 and the guys have also had their music featured on GoPro’s 2013 Superbowl commercial and CW show Arrow. They are set for big things in the electronica space in 2014.

Kat Krazy Ft Elkka – Siren

Degrassi – This 2013 song by UK native Kat Krazy has got a dubstep beat which might sound a bit dated shortly, but for now it’s got us nicely pumped!  It’s the perfect song for Drew and Zoe at a pool party at the Hollingsworths.

American Authors – Best Day Of My Life

Vampire Diaries Season 5 Ep 13 – This song is playing as Catherine plots to get Stefan back whilst deleting pics of Damon from Elena’s phone.  You can’t help being swept along by the mischievousness of her actions when you hear this upbeat tune.  Who doesn’t love a bit of a jaunty banjo riff when there’s body stealing going on?  American Authors formed in 2011, are based in New York, and as well as Vampire Diaries, this song also features on recent Ben Stiller directed The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Active Child Feat. Ellie Goulding – Silhoutte

Arrow Season 2 Episode 13 – This gorgeous tune is playing as Sara drops by Oliver’s lair, she tells him about Laurel’s reaction to her return and he tells her about his mother, they end up kissing.  Active Child relaxed sound utilizes lots of vocal harmonies, and it’s difficult to believe that it’s all the work of one man, Pat Grossi.  Ellie Goulding’s voice compliments his perfectly.

The Neighbourhood – Female Robbery

Vampire Diaries Season 5 Ep 13 – This 2012 track was released on an EP with the wildly successful Sweater Weather, and is great moody background music for Tyler, Nadia and Matt taking shots (but let’s face it, there’s a variety of music to fit all the drinking moods in Vampire Diaries).

St Vincent – Rattlesnake

Beauty and the Beast Season 2 Episode 13 – Opening of episode, as Catherine enters the dark room. Annie Erin Clark, or St Vincent as she is known, has been wowing audiences with her haunting vocals since 2009.  She’s pretty nifty on a Fender Jaguar too.  She’s currently on her third studio album, Strange Mercy, and resides in Manhattan where she’s been dazzling recent crowds at NY Fashion week with her funky blue hair!  She’s a fixture for us and she should be for you too.

AG – Shelter You

The Fosters Season 1 Episode 15 – Callie and Brandon confess their love for one another, even though they can’t be together, and AG is strumming along to help us feel their pain!  Real name Adrianne Gonzalez, AG has been bubbling around under the surface for some time now, but has yet to break solidly into the spotlight despite supporting Jeff Buckley, and featuring in loads of TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy and One Tree Hill.  With a vocal talent this strong, it’s surely only a matter of time.

Emilie Mover – Ride With the Tide

Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Episode 19 – Emilie Mover has an extremely evocative voice that conjures up the ghosts of songstresses past, and it’s no surprise that last year she laid down a Peggy Lee tribute album!  Ride With the Tide plays during Pretty Little Liars when Aria tells Spencer that she has been seeing Ezra again.  Get an earful of her most recent album Mighty Time; we promise you won’t be disappointed.

“Far From Yesterday” by Amy Stroup featured on PLL Season 4×3 “Cat’s Cradle”

Whenever the girls get together and catch up, there’s always a lot of ground to cover. That’s why a song entitled “Far From Yesterday” is eerily fitting. Amy Stroup’s vocals are beautiful and the lyrics totally capture that feeling of time flying by and not being able to do anything to stop it or the bad things that are happening around you. Check it out below.

“The Power” by District 78 feat. Cheesa featured on SYTYCD 10×15 “Top 8 Perform”

So You Think You Can Dance usually has pretty spot on selections for their music curating. Jasmine & tWitch’s hip hop dance for the Top 8 night was no different. The remix of “The Power” perfectly hit on the themes they were trying to touch on and the story they were trying to tell with respect to superheroes amongst us. Jasmine, usually reserved, really got a chance to get outside her shell and shine and show us her power. You go, girl.

“Open Your Eyes” by Andrew Belle featured on Degrassi 13×7 “Honey”

We had a major loss during this episode. At the end of “Honey” Adam doesn’t make it through his operation. Death is always tragic and Andrew Belle’s haunting song “Open Your Eyes” will stay with you long after the scene ends. RIP Adam Torres.

“When It’s Raining” by Stephanie Day on The Vineyard

Music supervision for reality television is always difficult. The drama happening on screen is so intense (usually) that you don’t want to distract from what’s happening, but music always helps underscore so it’s a delicate balance one needs to strike. The Vineyards has been doing a particularly good job with that this season. Exhibit A: Stephanie Day’s “When It’s Raining” perfectly underscored Daniel’s fraught conversation with Emily about Jon and Jackie. Enjoy!
