Kelsi Luck “That’s What I Like” // Switched at Birth, Season 3 Episode 19

This fun loving track by Kelsi Luck is playing whilst Daphne and Travis carouse at the fairground. This is the perfect soundtrack to a crazy day out if you ask us. Kelsi Luck is from St. Louis but currently resides in Los Angeles. This track dropped a year ago and we haven’t heard anything from her since, but judging from her publicity pictures she owns a pretty smoking collection of hats. Check out the track and video below!

Amy Stroup “Curious Heart” // Chasing Life, Season 1 Episode 9

This is a sweet love song that’s playing in the background as Sara walks in on Brenna and Greer making out … He-llo! Amy Stroup has had her music featured on over twenty shows, including Pretty Little Liars and Parenthood, making her one of the most prolific music contributors around… oh and she also plays guitar and sings in indie band Sugar and the Hi Lows. We love her gentle synth pop and think you will too. Check the track out here:

Joywave “Somebody New” // Teen Wolf, Season 4 Episode 7

This improbably upbeat party track is playing as the gang get started on their PSATs … but hey, sometimes you just need music to hype you up when you’re doing something horrible – right? Joywave are a supercool alternative act from Rochester New York who, even though some of their music features electronic sounds, still go by the adage that ‘music should be played not made’. This track comes from their debut EP How Do You Feel? Check it out here:

Paul McLinden “Harbour” // The Fosters, Season 2 Episode 8

This beautiful guitar picking track from Paul McLinden plays during the Community Day party. It’s a tranquil song for a tranquil scene. Paul McLinden comes from Glasgow, UK, which means that you probably wouldn’t be able to understand his speaking voice but we love his mellow music, which has also been featured in One Tree Hill.

Spelles “Bird in a Cage” // Pretty Little Liars, Season 5 Episode 9

Spelles sings in the background whilst Aria is texting in the courtyard before she sees Hanna and leaves. Spelles is an LA based songstress who has an amazing vocal talent; her music meets at an intersection between rock, folk and bluegrass and she is accomplished with all three genres. Check out the clip and a teaser for the track below!

TV Tunes April

Adriiana – Love Alive // Arrow Season 2 Episode 17

This fun little techno track by Adriiana is playing at Verdant when Roy collides into a patron and his temper bubbles over.  He goes straight to Thea and tells her he wants to end their relationship, so we’d say the lyrics are pretty apt!  Adriiana’s self titled debut album is out now.

Ry X – Shortline // Arrow Season 2 Episode 16

This track is playing when Diggle shows up to Lyla’s hotel room before they get down.  Ry X is a crazy talented singer songwriter who hails from Australia but lives in Los Angeles.  Shortline has a sombre feeling to it but we think it’s reminiscent of some of the best work of the XX and touches of Radiohead.  Last year he released the Berlin EP, which is well worth a listen.

The Chain Gang of 1974 – Miko // Tomorrow People Season 1 Episode 16

Can you feel the tension ebbing away?  Can you?!  This is the song that’s playing as Cara and John finally hook up again after months of yearning and waiting on both their parts.  We can only guess whether their lovemaking session was as er … energetic … as this song!  There’s so much going on in this track that it’s hard to believe that it’s the work of only one man, American DJ Kamtin Mohager who goes by the name of Chain Gang of 1974.

Foy Vance – Be The Song // Twisted Season 1 Episode 16

This beautiful, haunting track is playing as Jo laments her loss of Rico as a friend and avoids going into the diner to see him.  Foy Vance has been on the scene since 2007: an Irishman by birth, he relocated to the midwest as a child and traveled extensively through the southern states.  When he returned to Ireland as an adult, he had been heavily influenced by the rich musical traditions emanating from the south.

Sara Bareilles – Brave // Degrassi Season 13 Episode 24

Brave indeed.  This song is played as Zoe’s sexual abusers get escorted from school and Zoe is caught up in a hug from Drew, Dallas, Miles, Maya and Tristan.  Uplifting stuff, and we’d expect nothing less from Bareilles, who first broke the Billboard 100 with Love Song.  She’s pretty good at producing an anthem, this one.

Young Summer – Fever Dream // Degrassi Season 13 Episode 25

This song is playing as Maya is sleuthing on Zig, believing that he stole her laptop.  Young Summer is also known as Bobbie Allen, a DC native who sounds more than a little bit like Florence of Florence and the Machine, and in this track she throws in a handful of pop-synth vibes.  Her EP, also called Fever Dreams, was released in 2013.

Tift Merritt – Small Talk Relations // Degrassi Season 13 Episode 26

This is the background music at the semi formal as Imogen and Becky start to awkwardly slow dance with one another – the intimacy of this song makes their lack of sexual attraction all the funnier, which we guess was the intention!  Nevertheless, we were blown away by the heartfelt vocals and keys in this track.  Tift started her career in the late 90’s and has recorded albums in North America, England, and France.

TV Tunes

To commemorate our Superhero Issue we’ve pulled some of the most famous and recognizable Tunes from our favorite movies and TV shows starring…superheroes. Get ready for some new tunes and some blasts from the past.

Coldplay – Atlas

Atlas single coverThe new Hunger Games movie comes out this month and fans have been rabidly waiting for over a year. Thankfully this track featured in the movie leaked a little early to help tide us over. It’s Coldplay at their best, starting with a beautiful piano solo and thematically tying into what it means to be a hero. Atlas was a Greek God who carried the weight of the world on his back, literally, and heroes definitely feel a strong tie to him, especially our winners of the Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta.

Evanescence – Bring Me To Life

Bring Me to Live coverThis tune takes us back to 2003. Ben Affleck and now wife Jennifer Garner starred in Daredevil, which followed the mythical blind superhero. He was a man blinded by toxic waste, which also enhanced his remaining senses, who was able to fight crime as an acrobatic martial arts superhero. While the movie received plus minus reviews, it brought together one of Hollywood’s super-couples and it did EXTREMELY well in the Soundtrack space…particularly due to two monster hits from Evanescence. The first is Bring Me To Life, particularly apt for a superhero movie where Daredevil needs to assume and bring to life his new, heroic identity.

Evanescence – My Immortal (Daredevil)

My Immortal coverThe second smash hit from Daredevil is also attributed to Evanescence. This one is a little more romantic in tone and definitely plays on themes of heroism and what it means to love and be loved by someone struggling with their own power – a theme that relates clearly to superheroes but also to most of us at large.

Remy Zero – Save Me

Save Me coverSuperman is definitely one of the most iconic heroes of the canon. Smallville was a special show in that it broke ground in modernizing and making the genre especially relevant and paved the way for a bevy of TV shows (there are at least 3 new ones this season that probably wouldn’t exist if not for Smallville). Remy Zero’s song Save Me became iconic as the theme song for Smallville and probably will always be best remembered thusly. Check it out!

Maroon 5, Rozzi Crane – Come Away to the Water

Come Away to the Water imageWhen not hosting The Voice, Adam Levine continues to prove that he has an amazing one of his own. This tune, featuring newcomer Rozzi Crane, was featured in the first Hunger Games soundtrack. It’s haunting, inspiring and lingers with you long after it ends, much like the first movie did. It most sharply recalls the tender moment in which Katniss’s young friend dies and she provides her a makeshift burial of sorts and dedicates the rest of the “Game” to her. This song speaks better for itself, however, than any description. Check it out here.

Arcade Fire – Abraham’s Daughter

Hunger Games album coverBiblical references are the original Superhero stories. Who better than the Arcade Fire to tackle the sweeping, epic and emotionally-wrenching sound that accompanies those themes? This song was featured in The Hunger Games throughout and over credits and bookended an intense journey for audiences.

How Soon Is Now – The Smiths

Smiths album coverWhen pointing to pop song crossover into the superhero genre, it’s impossible to ignore the appropriation of The Smith’s classic, “How Soon Is Now” for the Charmed Theme song. Much like the Smallville theme song, this version became inextricably tied to the show for a generation and those opening notes will instantly recall the The Charmed Ones.

Coldplay – ‘Til Kingdom Come (Amazing Spiderman)

Spiderman album coverAgain, Coldplay’s powerful yet restrained vocals team nicely with themes power lasting long beyond their time. ‘Til Kingdom Come was a popular single in it’s own right but reached astronomical chart topping levels when it was featured in The Amazing Spiderman. It matches up with the movie both thematically and tonally and Chris Martin’s voice scored a win with fans of Spiderman.
