Vampire Diaries: With a funeral comes the resurrection of a show

Ever since Elena became a Vampire at the end of season 3, not being able to kill Klaus for two whole seasons, The Vampire Diaries has been a meandering spiral of some good episodes, some bad episodes, and some whiny Caroline episodes.

Now that The Originals has spun off into its own show, the creators of The Vampire Diaries have gone back to basics to recreate the love triangle that we all know, miss and love.

This past October 24th saw a game changer in the series with the startling episode For Whom the Bell Tolls. Elena tries to help Stephen remember who he is and what would happen if he again became the Ripper. While trying to help him remember, songs from previous episodes (Gravity by Sara Bareilles, and Longest Night by Howie Day) were built in episode to help the audience remember the relationship we loved and lost only a few seasons ago. The creators also took some cues from other shows, such as Teen Wolf – Jackson recording himself after blacking out one too many times – which made for some good television. If it worked there, why not use it again?

The real kicker, though, was at the end of the episode when the cast came together for a funeral they would never forget. The song Without a Word by Birdy plays as the crying starts and the cast balls. Stephen is nowhere to be found, though behind them an old friend shows up and surprises Caroline. It’s Tyler, and in his hand is a white rose. The scene was epic and had a fantasy feel, creating a TV moment that no fan of The Vampire Diaries will ever forget. Goodbye Bonnie.
