THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 1 – Teaser

Summed up as:
We might have only just begun summer, but the teaser for this fall’s next installment of The Hunger Games is already here!
Coolest thing about the trailer: This is a creative, unsettling and just slightly heavy-handed (like the series itself) approach to promoting the film, reminding us just how nefarious Panem and President Snow really are.
Dumbest thing in the trailer: While we kinda love Josh Hutcherson as a person (his interview last year in OUT Magazine was so cool), he’s such a tool as Peta Mellark and stands there toolishly in this trailer.
Worth seeing opening weekend? Uh, yes!!!!

TMNT – second trailer

Summed up as:
Another effort to suck some cash out of the tired 90s franchise known as
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Coolest thing in the trailer: We finally get to see a bit of Splinter, Shredder, and (best of all) Whoopi Goldberg!!!
Dumbest thing in the trailer: The Turtles themselves! They really didn’t think the visuals through very well. Their faces are so weeeeird. And poor Megan Fox. She barely gets a line of dialog in this trailer!
Worth seeing opening weekend? Sorry dudes, but, like, no way.

AFFLUENZA

Summed up as:
A hard-boiled look at Gen Y, in an affluent NY suburb right before the 2008 financial ‘collapse’.
Coolest thing in the trailer: The cast. There are tons and tons of notable YA actors here, including Trans4mers’ Nicola Peltz and our fave, Faking It’s Gregg Sulkin.
Strangest thing in the trailer: How everyone, including the parents, get high at every turn. But then again, this is a portrait of a ‘generation in decline’, after all…
Worth seeing opening weekend? This looks intriguing, so we’ll say yes. A nice alternative to all the hyped-up effects extravaganzas.

4 MINUTE MILE

Summed up as:
Another sports movie about the underdog, this time a boy from the wrong side of the tracks who needs a track scholarship to survive.
Coolest thing in the trailer: The under-appreciated Richard Jenkins gets the plum role of the young athlete’s mentor. We’re also happy to see YA character actress Analeigh Tipton in a ‘straighter’ role as the love interest.
Funniest thing in the trailer: Jenkins’ Mr. Miyagi moment – ‘Wax on, wax off.’ #Classic.
Worth seeing opening weekend? If you like underdog stories, sure. And who doesn’t like underdog stories?

AT THE DEVIL’S DOOR

Summed up as:
The latest occult possession movie with people standing haphazardly in dark hallways, just because.
Coolest thing in the trailer: One word: Santana! Yes, you got it—Naya Rivera is getting all dark here, trading in Glee for a succulent-looking horror treat.
Scariest moment in the trailer: The weird neck moment. Gross!
Worth seeing opening weekend? Wanna get a summer chill? We do!

LIFE AFTER BETH

Summed up as:
The zombie genre invasion continues with this dark rom-com, favorited at many a film fest.
Funniest thing in the trailer: We kinda love Aubrey Plaza as a snotty zombie who can talk, but unsurprisingly, her parents—John C. Reilly and the always-brill Molly Shannon—steal the show
Weirdest thing in the trailer: Creepy Dane DeHaan as the straight-laced love interest? He might’ve been good as a zombie too…
Worth seeing opening weekend? This is a little late in the game when it comes to zombie movies…we feel like we’ve been there, done that.

SPARE PARTS

Summed up as:
Another underdog movie, this one based on a true story about four underprivileged Arizona high school students with dreams of winning a NASA robotics competition.
Coolest thing in the trailer: Alexa PenaVega, formerly known as Alexa Vega of Sky Kids!
Biggest surprise: Exciting to see Marisa Tomei in any project, even ones where she keeps her clothes on, like she does here.
Worth seeing opening weekend? This one looks inspiring but VOD-able.
