One of the big announcements about the upcoming season of Arrow is a bit of casting news: Austin Butler is joining the cast! Having most recently been seen in The CW’s The Carrie Diaries and ABC Family’s Switched at Birth, Austin has been in the biz a long time, going all the way back to main cast roles on Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101 and ABC Family’s Ruby and the Rockits.
Austin will join the cast of Arrow as Chase, a DJ who becomes a new love interest for Thea (Willa Holland). Not much else is known about this new character, but it is reported that he will appear on the seventh episode of the new season.
As much as we’re excited to see such a seasoned young actor added to the cast of Arrow, we’re not super excited about the Thea-Chase pairing, for the following reasons:
1) Chase is a DJ, which means he’s embedded in the club scene, and Thea has been there and done that. We don’t really care to see her get pulled back into old habits, if you know what we mean.
2) We want to see Thea with a man, not a boy. Even though Colton Haynes and Austin Butler are only three years apart in real life, Austin’s character is likely to be on the younger side due to his boyish good looks. Colton, on the other hand, has the chiseled mug of a man, and we just simply think that’s a better fit for Thea.
3) We root for Roy! He’s a hero. He’s super hot. Sure, he had some rage issues this past season, but it’s not like it’s the first time we’ve seen Colton Haynes play a character with some anger management issues (think Jackson as the Kanima in Teen Wolf Season 2), and in the end, things worked out for the better, making a stronger, more loveable character (on Arrow AND Teen Wolf).
4) If Thea is going to be moving on in her love life, we AT LEAST need her to get some closure with Roy first. At the end of last season, Thea’s discovery that Roy has been working with Arrow shocked her to the point that she skipped town without looking back. We know that Thea will return, though under what circumstances we’re not sure, so if she just jumps into a relationship with some other guy, like a DJ named Chase, it’s just going to frustrate us and make us want her to get back with Roy even more.
Don’t miss the season premiere of Arrow on Wednesday, October 8 at 8:00 pm on The CW.
