The Teen Choice Awards are Sunday!

With Summer in full swing, that means it’s time for the annual Teen Choice Awards. Nick Cannon and Lele Pons will share the hosting gig during the evening dedicated to young adult pop culture.

The show’s top prize in the drama category has some returning favorites like This Is Us and Empire, but expect The CW juggernaut Riverdale to repeat. The murder-mystery has become a cultural phenomenon since its premiere in 2016, and it even snapped the five-year winning streak in this category for Pretty Little Liars. This time around, Archie and his titular town won’t have to go up against the popular Freeform series, which concluded its run in 2017, also their final year of eligibility.

In the sci-fi/fantasy categories, Netflix’s Stranger Things is the likely favorite following an explosive season 2 release last Fall. However, don’t count out Shadowhunters, which is also up for the top prize in this field for the second year in a row. Despite the shows recent struggles with ratings (not enough viewers for a fourth season, instead a “3B” set of episodes will branch off of this past season in 2019), the series grabbed five nominations, including acting nods for four of their stars, proving the existence of a devoted cult fan base. This will also be the first year in the history of the sci-fi/fantasy group that the successful Vampire Diaries will not be present. Seven of the eight Choice TV Show: Fantasy/Sci-fi awards went to The CW’s hit, but like PLL, The Vampire Diaries also closed its doors in 2017. Nevertheless, it’s spirit lives on in its spinoff, The Originals, which is up for said top award for the first time in 2018.

While the aforementioned Stranger Things is certainly a huge hit, another Netflix show with a following is noticeably absent from the awards for the second year in a row. Constantly appearing on the “trending now” section wasn’t enough for 13 Reasons Why to get some love. The snub is most likely due to the ever-increasing controversy surrounding the show’s subject matter and its portrayals of teen depression. Plus, it’s not like the show was lacking in viewers: Netflix revealed last year it was their second most-streamed original series behind Marvel’s Daredevil.

As for the Choice Comedy TV Show award, spinoff Fuller House is looking for its third win in a row in this category, while Marvel’s surging popularity will likely boost chances for The CW’s The Flash to repeat as well. Bottom line: if past winners in Teen Choice Awards history are any indicator, whatever show won an award last year will likely win it again.

Speaking of Marvel, Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther are locks to score big in the Action Movie and Sci-fi Movie fields, respectively. The pair of blockbusters were box office smashes for a superhero genre at its peak in popularity. Elsewhere on movies, sleeper hit A Quiet Place definitely made noise this year among voters, so they’ll probably take home Choice Drama Movie while the charm of the acclaimed LGBT movie Love, Simon is sure to translate to wins in the Choice Comedy Movie group.

The 20th annual Teen Choice Awards are set to air on Sunday, August 12th at 8/7c on Fox.
