The fourth and final season of The Way Home is underway and we chatted exclusively with actress Bianca Melchior who stars as young Fern Landry in season 4 of Hallmark’s hit show. The first three seasons are available to stream on Netflix and new episodes of season four are being released weekly on Sundays at 9/8c on the Hallmark Channel.
Bianca shares her audition process experience, how she prepared for the songs she performs in the show, the cast’s chemistry, and stay tuned till the end for her rapid fire takes.
The Way Home is a time travel drama which follows three generations of the strong, independent Landry women who embark on a journey to find their way back to each other. The series is led by a star studded cast including Chyler Leigh (Kat), Andie MacDowell (Del), Jefferson Brown (Colton), and Sadie Laflamme-Snow (Alice).
Season 4 follows the Landry women during the 1970s and 1925. Kat navigates the past looking for clues about Elliot’s mother, while Alice tackles high school graduation and Del faces empty-nester life.
Bianca has also played Sonja Edwards in the Netflix show Slasher and joined Apple TV’s Emmy Award winning series Schmigadoon in its second season. She revealed her audition process to play the 1920s speakeasy starlet Fern Landry was the quickest turnaround process she’s ever had as an actress, as she was cast in the show a week before she went to camera.
“The audition process was wild and amazing and the timing just worked out really well.”
Thankfully, Bianca said she felt very comfortable playing Fern and loved playing around with the character material.
“It’s such a gift to be given such amazing material to work with.”
Like many of the actors we talk to, Bianca also made a playlist for Fern to get into the headspace of that 1920s era while also including lots of modern music. And because she actually sings in the show, she listened to different versions of the songs she performed and actually loved singing music from that era, calling it pure and endearing.
Even though she joined the show during the fourth season, Bianca said everyone on set, from Jordan Doww to Chyler Leigh was so incredibly welcoming and warm.
“The entire cast and crew made me feel so welcomed right away.”
Bianca also shares her takes on the series, including whether Elliot and Kat may be endgame and if she thinks The Way Home really is a love story or tragedy. Tell us what you think!
“Time traveling in this show is about mysteries becoming revealed.”

Consider this:
- It is important to go into auditions trusting your instinct and being prepared. If you have studied the source material and what you know about the character, be confident in your interpretation and trust yourself during the process.
