Singer Michael J. Woodard Loves Love in His New E.P. MJW1 | Young Entertainment Exclusive

Michael J. Woodard’s musical sound is vibrant, loving, and soulful. He first came onto the scene on the 16th season of American Idol when he captivated judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. He continues to write and perform music and recently released his debut E.P. MJW1. We had a moment with Michael right before his E.P. debuted to learn more about his barrier-breaking sound.

Michael hopes this first E.P. will serve as an introduction to his sound and get to know him more as an artist. His two favorite songs off of MJW1 are “Trouble” and “Hems”. While many of the songs deal with love and heartbreak, there are also some fun and upbeat songs, catering to many different audiences.

“I am just a lover boy, I just love to write about love and the journey that it is because it is such a broad and worldwide topic.”

Michael said his time on American Idol changed his life and he is so grateful to have had that platform and opportunity. It was an experience that allowed him to make lasting connections, one of them being with American Idol judge Katy Perry who is now his mentor.

“[American Idol] shows you what it is like behind the scenes and before you even make it. It shows you what that process will be like when you do so. I am just grateful for that whole process.”

Michael first got his start as a singer in his hometown of Philadelphia, singing in church choirs. In addition to his time on American Idol, Michael voiced Arlo in the film Arlo the Alligator Boy and the follow up series I ♥ Arlo. Michael enjoyed this voice acting experience and even incorporated music into the project by helping to create the soundtrack. Then in 2021, Michael was signed to Katy Perry’s label Unsub Records.

The singer is getting back into the studio soon and would love to release another E.P. He’s been studying different male R&B artists for inspiration, from John Legend to J. Holiday, to incorporate different styles into his music.
