One Past Midnight

SYNOPSIS:
For as long as she can remember, Sabine has lived two lives. Every 24 hours she Shifts to her other life – a life where she is exactly the same, but absolutely everything else is different: different family, different friends, different social expectations. In one life she has a sister, in the other she does not. In one life shes a straight-A student with the perfect boyfriend, in the other shes considered a reckless delinquent. Nothing about her situation has ever changed, until the day when she discovers a glitch: the arm she breaks in one life is perfectly fine in the other.

With this new knowledge, Sabine begins a series of increasingly risky experiments which bring her dangerously close to the life shes always wanted… But just what – and who – is she really risking?

WHY SHOULD YOU CHECK IT OUT?
Fascinating concept aside, what draws us the most to Sabine is the very real potential that all of this could just be in her head. Stories of magical realism masquerading as mental health issues are hard to put down! And then, yes, Sabine’s double life—one perfect, one flawed but real—are equally enticing.

There’s an almost unsettling quality to the cover in Sabine’s tendrils of dark hair. It reminds us of The Grudge and of bare winter branches. Equally eerie is Sabine’s serene expression as she glides along over nothingness.

Author Jessica Shirvington previously published the Violet Eden Chapters, a series of YA novels following a teenage angel. If you can’t wait for Sabine, hunt down Violet first!

EARLY REVIEWS SAY…
Shirvington keeps her interesting paranormal concept slightly vague: Does Sabine simply cross into a parallel universe, or does some other supernatural force cause her shifts? Could she simply be mentally ill? (Kirkus Review)

Conveniences abound, beginning with the close proximity of Sabine’s two lives and concluding with a too-neat ending, which arrives in the wake of a melodramatic twist. (Publishers Weekly)
