Paper Airplanes

SYNOPSIS:
It’s the mid-1990s, and fifteen year-old Guernsey schoolgirls, Renée and Flo, are not really meant to be friends. Thoughtful, introspective and studious Flo couldn’t be more different to ambitious, extroverted and sexually curious Renée.

But Renée and Flo are united by loneliness and their dysfunctional families, and an intense bond is formed. Although there are obstacles to their friendship (namely Flo’s jealous ex-best friend and Renée’s growing infatuation with Flo’s brother), fifteen is an age where anything can happen, where life stretches out before you, and when every betrayal feels like the end of the world. For Renée and Flo it is the time of their lives.

With graphic content and some scenes of a sexual nature, PAPER AEROPLANES is a gritty, poignant, often laugh-out-loud funny and powerful novel. It is an unforgettable snapshot of small-town adolescence and the heart-stopping power of female friendship.

WHY SHOULD YOU CHECK IT OUT?
We saw the 90s revival coming from a mile away, but we never thought it would hit the ground running with a story about two girls and their unlikely but amazing friendship. This one sounds like it will hit all the right notes for 90s fanatics and those who were teens in a world not yet overrun with social media. We’re hanging out hopes high on Renée and Flo–fingers crossed!

In hot pink and muted electric blue, this cover both pops from its color choices and makes you go back for a second and third look from all the imagery going on. Note how the girls’ pinkie fingers are entwined in a super cute show of girl-love; and the hint of lined notebook paper across the lower half; plus how the graffiti gives the whole picture a glossy photo feel as though the girl have doodled all over it themselves.

Dawn O’Porter is, in addition to being a young adult author, a broadcaster and print journalist. She lives in London with her husband, The IT Crowd actor Chris O’Dowd, and spends a lot of time in LA. She has made many documentaries on topics like polygamy, geishas, body image, and the movie Dirty Dancing. Find her online at www.DawnPorter.net!

EARLY REVIEWS SAY…
American readers will find the occasional Briticism more entertaining than puzzling, and the contrasting, humorous and sometimes-desperate voices of these teens capture the essence of a certain time of girlhood when social status is everything. … Poignant and edgy, this exploration of lively female friendships rises high.(Kirkus Reviews)
