Shows set in “period” tend to be a tough needle to thread. They come and go. Some are successful and some less so. The Goldbergs is one to be excited about. Fox heads back to the 80s (with Patton Oswald narrating, no less), to follow the trials and travails of a teen, Adam Goldberg. Adam is growing up with a crazy family (who isn’t?) and documenting their every move with his newest possession: a video camera. Dad Murray is grumpy pretty much all the time, which recalls a wildly successful period show, The Wonder Years, while mother Beverly has a distinct lack of respect for privacy. Adam’s siblings Barry and Erica are just trying to navigate high school, while retired Pops is busy romancing the ladies, which can lead to some awkwardness for poor puberty-cusping Adam. The hair alone is enough to tune in. Not to mention the sweaters. Fans of early Judd Apatow (Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared) will be pleased with this foray into comedy. Catch The Goldbergs on Tuesdays on ABC. Check local listings for times.
