The second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender is right around the corner! The Netflix live-action adaption of the hit Nickelodeon animated series is out on June 25th.
Before the season premiere, we chatted with producer and writer Christine Boylan, producer and director Jabbar Raisani, and cast members Gordon Cormier (Aang), Ian Ousley (Sokka), Kiawentiio (Katara), Miyako Cech (Toph Beifong), Elizabeth Yu (Princess Azula) and Dallas Liu (Prince Zuko), to chat all about the second season.
Christine: “I love when people creatively participate in fandoms.”
Season 2 of the show follows Aang, Katara, and Sokka on a journey across the Earth Kingdom to find the Earth King and secure his aid against the Fire Nation and the Fire Lord Ozai. Along the way, Aang must learn earthbending with the help of Toph, a fierce, blind master. The group will need to reach the city of Ba Sing Se while also evading an empowered Princess Azula and fugitive Prince Zuko.
While most of the main cast is back, there are new characters in season 2 and Christine and Jabaar shared that for a show that comes from a well known animated series, the audition sides were fake scenes so they really were looking for people to dive into the heart of the characters and take risks.
Jabbar: “Don’t prepare only one way for an audition. Be prepared for the character and be prepared for things to shift.”
Because the show is a retelling of such a legendary story, fans will just have to watch and see what made it into season 2 from the animated series!
The cast from season 1 grew super close while filming which made that on screen chemistry that much easier to master in season 2. And for main characters like Aang, played by Gordon, a lot of that comfortability has come with time!
Elizabeth: “That sibling relationship came very naturally.”
Gordon: “I’ve learned as much as I possibly can about Aang.”
There are also new fights and action scenes to look forward to in season 2. For Dallas’s Prince Zuko, he even gets to create fire!
Dallas: “When it comes to imagining fire, I always loved superheroes, action, and anime growing up so it was a dream come true.”
The cast also reveals whether they are Zutara (Zuko and Katara) truthers or whether it’ll be an uphill battle.

Consider this:
- Don’t be afraid to take risks in an audition. The casting team in the audition room is looking for actors who can really find the rhythm and soul of a character and not be afraid to try new things, so it is important to prepare multiple ways.
