A beloved adaptation is back! Little House on the Prairie, based on the books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, is already a hit on Netflix and available to stream now. We Facetimed with Skywalker Hughes, who stars as Mary Ingalls in the show to learn more.
The reboot follows the Ingalls family as they leave their old life behind to homestead on the American frontier.
Skywalker is a rising star, getting her start playing the leading role of Sherridan Pickett in the drama series Joe Pickett. She also starred alongside Hilary Swank in the film Ordinary Angels.
“I felt like I’ve known Mary as a character for so long.”
Skywalker revealed that she had read the entire Little House on the Prairie series at a young age and watched the TV series shortly after. It was such a surreal experience for her getting to be part of such an anticipated adaptation.
“I was a huge fan of the books. I would get lost in them.”
Skywalker developed such a bestie and sisterly relationship with Alice Halsey, who plays her older sister Laura Ingalls. The two bonded instantly which made their relationship on screen that much stronger.
“From the moment me and Alice met in the chemistry read, we immediately clicked.”
Mary Ingalls has many emotional moments, and so it was important to Skywalker to nail crying on cue and accurately portraying those experiences. She said the most important thing in prepping for those scenes was putting herself in Mary’s shoes and sharing a similar headspace.
The cast became like a family on set, and Skywalker revealed her favorite memory from set was the last day of filming at the cabin. Everyone was so emotional, but not because they were leaving each other! The series is confirmed for a season 2 and Skywalker would love to see Mary grow more into her own and also develop new friendships.
“We became such a tight knit family during season one.”
