HSMTMTS comes back in 2022!

See you soon, wildcats! High School Musical: The Musical: The Series returns for its third season in 2022!

“Grab a canoe and we’ll see you in ’22 – Season 3 of @highschoomusicalseries is coming to @disneyplus! 🛶🎭🤗 “ HSMTMTS creator Tim Federle wrote in an Instagram caption.

Season 1 of HSMTMTS first premiered on Disney+ in November 2019. Its popularity led to a holiday special in December 2020 followed by Season 2’s premiere this past May. Inspired by the original High School Musical movies, HSMTMTS takes place at East High where a group of students perform popular musical numbers. In Season 1, the students performed their own musical version of the original High School Musical with Ricky (Joshua Bassett) and Nini (Olivia Rodrigo) landing the lead parts of Troy and Gabriella.

The familiar backdrop of East High as well as the plot and colorful characters made HSMTMTS a wide success; in fact, a second season was announced a month before the first season even premiered.

Fans were excited to watch their favorite characters come back for Season 2 with their spring performance of “Beauty and the Beast”, and Season 2 not only lived up to but surpassed expectations with the rivalry between East High and North High, new romances (and old ones fizzling out), and new characters. There were so many memorable moments in Season 2: Olivia Rodrigo performance of her original song “The Rose Song” was nothing short of incredible, EJ (Matt Cornett) and Big Red (Larry Saperstein) were given their times to shine with the song “Gaston”, and other characters such as Gina (Sofia Wylie) and Ashlyn (Julia Lester) were given more depth and screentime which made them shine in new ways. Season 2 left us with a lot of unanswered questions as well as a deep excitement for what’s to come.

HSMTMTS was recently renewed for Season 3 back in September, and filming of the show will relocate from Salt Lake City, Utah to Los Angeles, California and East High’s theater will be traded out for summer camp. According to Tim Federle’s Instagram post, 1.) Season 3 comes out sometime in 2022 and 2.) ok, but does the tagline “LOVE IS AN OPEN DOOR” hint to Frozen???

Is it possible that the East High Wildcats will perform their own musical rendition of “Frozen” while they’re away at summer camp? Although the official release date of the show has yet to be announced, we can still speculate! Hang tight HSMTMTS fans. YEM will endure this grueling wait with you. In the meantime, we can all rewatch the show to hold us over until Season 3 comes out next year.

Don’t forget to (re)stream the first two seasons of HSMTMTS on Disney+.
