“Next To Me” by Glee Cast on Glee in episode “Sweet Dreams”

In a show about musical performances, it’s difficult to pinpoint a standout. “Next to Me” is one of those performances. In trying to figure out what to sing for her Broadway audition, Rachel lists toward the ever-classic Barbara. Her mother strongly dissuades her and a beautiful rendition of Sande’s “Next to Me” ensues. The harmony between the two women beautifully showcases both of their voices and makes it hard to distinguish who is the more accomplished songstress.

Remember” by Kari Kimmel on The Vampire Diaries in episode “Pictures of You”

The Vampire Diaries is a show that consistently revisits the associated themes of torturous love – and a show about vampires is obviously an ideal arena in which to explore that. The most recent season is no different. In the episode entitled “Pictures of You,” Caroline & Stefan dance as they talk about Elena and the associated pains of her betrayal and love in general. “Remember” by Kari Kimmel plays in the background as this conversation unfolds and provides a tailor-made sense of atmosphere that supports the levity of the conversation.

J’aime Ca” by Les Handclaps on Awkward in episode “Cha-cha-cha-changes”

Only a song as strange as “J’aime Ca” by Les Handclaps would be totally fitting for Val to give Jenna advice in the new season of Awkward. The song can be heard underneath her headscarf fuelled encouragement that creative writing is the way to go. The French overtones just add to the authenticity of the themes being discussed.

We Are Water” by Nashville cast on Nashville in episode “My Heart Would Know”

The second half of this season of Nashville is largely focused on the personal growth of the Taylor Swift-gone-bad type character Juliette Barnes, played by former child actress Hayden Panettiere. “We Are Water” is a reflection of that growth – the song engages themes as love and loss. It’s also a more vocally challenging song than we’ve heard from her before. She sings the song in a meditative moment, which in it’s own way is reflective of her personal growth.
